About this audiobook

ONE LOVE STORY. TWO MARRIAGES. THREE VERSIONS OF THE TRUTH.

Too Good to Be True is an obsessive, addictive love story for fans of Lisa Jewell and The Wife Upstairs, from Carola Lovering, the beloved author of Tell Me Lies.

Skye Starling is overjoyed when her boyfriend, Burke Michaels, proposes after a whirlwind courtship. Though Skye seems to have the world at her fingertips—she’s smart, beautiful, and from a well-off family—she’s also battled crippling OCD ever since her mother’s death when she was eleven, and her romantic relationships have suffered as a result.

But now Burke—handsome, older, and more emotionally mature than any man she’s met before—says he wants her. Forever. Except, Burke isn’t who he claims to be. And interspersed letters to his therapist reveal the truth: he’s happily married, and using Skye for his own, deceptive ends.

In a third perspective, set thirty years earlier, a scrappy seventeen-year-old named Heather is determined to end things with Burke, a local bad boy, and make a better life for herself in New York City. But can her adolescent love stay firmly in her past—or will he find his way into her future?

On a collision course she doesn’t see coming, Skye throws herself into wedding planning, as Burke’s scheme grows ever more twisted. But of course, even the best laid plans can go astray. And just when you think you know where this story is going, you’ll discover that there’s more than one way to spin the truth.

“Lovering, a master of manipulation to rival her own characters, does a skillful job of gradually unspooling her intricate tapestry of psychological intrigue while deftly juggling her multiple narratives.” -- Kirkus, starred review

It was slow to start, got really exciting in the middle and wrapped up super fast.

Not at all what I was expecting. I was expecting something more suspenseful and thrilling and this was more of a glorified love story. Rather unlikeable characters and the ending was wholly unsatisfying.

Pretty much a very long romance novel with some twists. Not my taste.

This review will be short and sweet, since this is one of those books where, when attempting to review it, the less said the better. I'm that reader that doesn't even want to know a twist is coming in a book, because I end up reading and trying to guess what the twist will be. So I won't say much beyond what's in the synopsis. It kept me guessing - it's told from three points of view and you really aren't sure if any of the three are really reliable narrators. I'll just say that despite the fact a bit of suspension of disbelief was required, ultimately I very much enjoyed this one.
My thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for providing a copy for an unbiased review.

The author took a page (or two, pun intended) out of Gone Girl. When a character used the phrase “A cool girl” I giggled. It’s not nearly as smart or clever as the original, and I almost feel like she gave the antagonist a happy ending to stick with her Gone Girl theme. Entertaining if you have nothing else to read, and could have been good.

Really good book, kind of unputdownable! Twists that aren’t entirely predictable and definitely soap opera-y. Fun summer read!

I was hesitant to read this book because of some reviews but I’m so happy I gave it a listen. The different narrators made this book great. Happy, suspenseful, saddening, relief, hate,; I felt every emotion. I enjoyed this book. Highly recommend!

This was a GREAT book. Lots of twists and kept me super interested the whole time. I rarely write book reviews on books I like but had to on this one. Loved the readers. I’m going to look for more books by this author.

Audiobook quality is a 5/5 ⭐️‘s, there’s multiple narrators and it was great!

The book itself is probably a 4/4.5, I thoroughly enjoyed it and even gasped in shock quite a few times because no I didn’t figure most of the twists out. It’s one of the better domestic thrillers I’ve read, and I hateeeee one of the characters and wish more people knew what happened to them, but overall I really enjoyed this!

    review from IG mindallbooks :

Look, this book isn’t superbly written but it is smart. It’s got a few twists, is entertaining and you really don’t see a lot of it coming. The narration was really well done and would recommend as an audio choice.

A book told from three point of views, the character development was there with faults, aspirations & goals. While there are some over the top romance parts it’s mostly about three people and the choices they’ve made. While the book changed pace halfway, I actually enjoyed that- and it made me change my perceptions of the characters and wonder what I would have done.

Yikes, this whole story was so problematic, even trying to suspend reality for the sake of entertainment.
