About this audiobook

“One of the finest romance authors of all time.”
—Julia Quinn

New York Times bestselling author Loretta Chase follows her historical romance gem, Silk is for Seduction (nominated for 2011 Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award for Best Regency-Set Historical Romance) with yet another winner. This time, Scandal Wears Satin, as the second sister from a somewhat scandalous aristocratic family—the purveyors of one of London’s most fashionable shops—finds passion and a love as sumptuous as the gorgeous gowns she creates. Superstar romance author Susan Elizabeth Phillips says Loretta Chase has “a rare talent for creating crackling sexual tension and characters so fresh and compelling that readers won’t be able to forget them.” Chase fans, as well as Stephanie Laurens and Julia Quinn readers, will most assuredly agree—especially when they meet feisty Sophy and the rakish earl whose help (and heart) she enlists in order to win the patronage of a dowager lady.

I very much enjoyed this book. Loved the banter between Sophy and Harry. The book was fun, light and entertaining.

Not that unintelligent people don't deserve love too, but I found it weird that we're so often reminded that the male lead is not smart. And not in an 'uneducated but he's got street-smarts' way, or savvy but also dyslexic- just genuinely slow minded. Every chapter or two it's mentioned again that thinking hurts his brain or that he struggles to hold two concepts in his head at once... Leads don't need to be perfect by any means, but this felt sort of unnecessary and harped upon.

Perhaps not as good as #1 in the Dressmakers series, but this book is filled with classic Loretta Chase humor, fun characters, and a bit of adventure. Yes, Harry is a bit of a dim bulb (but he's really quite clever in his own way), and Sophie is a bit of a bossy Bess, but it's lots of fun to watch these two tangle.

And please tell me that somehow, some way, poor Lady Clara will wind up with her own HEA.

    Favorite quotes:

“That’s what brings in the customers: the combination of gossip and the intricate detail about the dresses, all related as drama. It has the same effect on women, I’m told, as looking at naked women has on men.”

“Go away,” he said. “Do you know you’ve almost no clothes on?”
    “Never mind. I need—”
“Never mind? Listen to me, Miss Innocence. There are many things a man can ‘never mind.’ A nearly naked woman isn’t one of them.”

“Clara will break him to bridle,” Longmore said. “And if she can’t cure his wild ways, who knows? Maybe he’ll ride into a ditch or get run over by a post chaise, and she’ll be a young widow. Do try to look on the bright side.”

“Just listen,” she said. “You can’t kill him in cold blood.”
    “Whyever not?”
Ye gods grant me patience. “Because he’ll be dead,” she said as patiently as she could, “and Lady Clara’s reputation will be stained forever. Do not, I pray you, do anything, Lord Longmore. Leave this to us.”
    “Us.”
    “My sisters and me.”
“What do you propose? Dressing him to death? Tying him up and making him listen to fashion descriptions?”

Loretta Chase does it again! This time Sophie Noirot has hero, the Earl of Longmore tied up in knots as he tries to keep up with her while trying to find his sister Clara who has bolted from London to avoid marrying a fortune hunter. Sophie does cartwheels around him due to her amazing ability with disguises and flair for drama, whether in the shop or with a pen. In other words - he is a lost man. Her beauty and intellect had him from their first meeting. Is she a strong heroine? You bet! Despite falling in love with her, can Longmore overcome society's condemnation of an aristocrat marrying a dressmaker? How can it work? (It helps that her sister married a duke). The real crux is will his mother ever accept her? I loved this book and it was a pleasure to see Sophie in action - she's an original! I only wish Longmore was more of an intellectual match for her, rather than someone who believes beating someone to a pulp is the way to solve everything! At any rate, this was an entertaining historical!

Sophie Noiret's older sister recently married a duke. But the sisters are still trying to keep their dressmaking shop running. Lord Longmore finds himself strangely drawn to Sophie. When his sister Clara, the sisters' best customer, is trapped into becoming engaged to a cad, Longmore and Sophie join forces to stop the wedding.Fun but not a keeper.

Sophy Noirot and her sisters have put their hearts and souls into making their dress shop the toast of the ton. Much of their success is due to the patronage of Lady Clara. Thus, when their influential yet headstrong client falls prey to a fortune-hunter, Sophy is forced to work with her brother, Lord Harry Longmore, to save Clara's reputation. Now if only they can keep their minds on the prize and their hands off each other…

Longmore and Sophy's romance is more engaging than Marcelline and Clevedon's in book #1. Their witty banter is entertaining and their chemistry is tangible.

Sophy is an insightful and resourceful heroine who runs circles around Longmore, or so she thinks. Longmore is also very appealing and intriguing. He seems to come across as a large and overbearing idiot, but there are hints throughout that he is, in fact, exceedingly intelligent and genuinely cares about people. The question, which unfortunately remains unanswered, is why he would behave in this manner.

The plot revolves around Sophy and Longmore's attempts to save Clara from a smarmy and manipulative suitor. This seems simple enough at first, but becomes overly complicated with several incidences in which Sophy assumes alternate identities. It is all unnecessarily and excessively convoluted. Moreover, as one who has never been particularly interested in fashion, the endless descriptions of gowns and accessories is tedious and insipid.

In sum, a charming romance with likeable characters, but the focus on the dressmaking elements needs to be toned down.

Amazing! I don’t know whether to go on to the next book or read it again to try to picked up all the “clues” this time! I love this continuation of what happens in the family line of the “dreadful DeLuci’s”!
