- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is so good, beautifully written, and amazingly narrated. There’s so many plot twists that you truly don’t see coming, and the storyline is very original. A must read for sure.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5My choice to read Sisters of Sword & Song was 100% motivated by cover love. I was scrolling through the available books at the library, eager to try another young adult fantasy book out, and stumbled upon this gem. If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you know that strong female characters are one of my absolute favorite things in stories. I had high hopes that Halcyon and Evadne would fit that bill. Plus, this book promised me at least a bit of magic led by the gods! So I was pretty excited about it.Things started out strong, with Halcyon and Evadne nestling perfectly inside that strong personality mold I was hoping for. I loved their relationship so much. It’s always nice to see sisters who truly love one another. Sisters who support on another unflinchingly, even when it means losing something of their own. I also really appreciated the fact that this wasn’t your typical “super magical girl” story. Halcyon is strong, yes, but through her own hard work and dedication. Evadne has her own strength, based in her wit and her willingness to help others. They do eventually get to experience some magic, which I won’t spoil, but really these two are just extraordinary women all on their own. What I will say though, is that the god owned magic part of this story fell extremely short for me. In fact, most of the world building here is very two dimensional. The concept of sung magic is introduced, and glossed over. The idea of relics that possess their own magic, passed down from the gods, is also introduced and then glossed over. I really wanted so much more explanation and depth to this part of the world. The lack of it made the story feel flat and, no matter how hard they tried, it made the characters feel flat as well. I didn’t feel like that at the beginning, but the further the book progressed the more I could tell that I wouldn’t be getting the background I was hoping for.My other big issue was that there was never really any tension in this book. All of the pieces that should cause tension were there. Family in-fighting, secret plans, murders and trials were all placed in front of our characters. However, everything just cleaned up so nicely and quickly. It all felt very anti-climactic. I could have let it go, to be honest, except that the ultimate showdown that I was waiting for was treated in that same, vague manner. Even though I loved the little nods here and there to character growth, or the sweet romance attempting to grow, it was drowned out by the lack of the depth.I do think that this is would be a great entry level read for anyone who is looking to dive into Fantasy as a genre. The nice part about the way this is written is that it doesn’t require a lot of rereading, or complicated character charts to understand. So I’ll happily give it three stars. Try this out if you’re looking for something light, that has great family relationships.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sisters of Sword and Song by Rebecca Ross is a beautiful tale of family, love, honour, loyalty. Of finding one's place in the world. (Break free of your chrysalis and become who you were meant to be.)It was refreshing to read a book where romance didn't thread the bulk of the story. This is a tale of war and intrigue. Bright, vivid, harsh. It is a tale of familial love, sisterly love. I wanted to be a part of Hal and Eva's family. I wish my own family had the same camaraderie as between this extended family of olive growers. I adored Hal and Eva. Usually, in multi-POV stories, I tend to prefer one character over the other(s). In this case, I was as enthralled by Eva's story as I was by Hal's. Each was different, but captivating. Eva has an injury that causes her to limp. In spite of this supposed infirmity, Eva still managed to do all manner of things, including caving, confronting her deep phobias, and helping to save the kingdom. Both are kick-ass heroines! Hal trained as a hoplite, and endures a terrible sickness wrought of poison, all without losing her fire. Damon was my favourite secondary character. He was absolutely precious in his actions toward Eva. And he has an unusual type of heterochromia! Pretty cool, and mismatched eyes are something we share. The magic system in this story was awesome! Song and poetry as magic is nothing new, but here it was just lovely. Not being able to write with your dominant hand because the letters won't stay on the page, that's new. Most magi in this world have a scribe to write down spells, and take correspondence for their mage. I found it a brilliant new variant of having a familiar. Selene's plots, plans, and machinations to subjugate the common population, and elevate the mages to an untouchable level because they were allegedly superior called to mind the currents events, where subjugated peoples, and their allies, are finally (finally!) taking a stand, pushing back, seeking true equality. This pandemic was the tinder to this Wildfire. Highly recommended! ***Many thanks to the author/ publisher for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. Reviewed via FFBC Tours.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Halcyon is strong, eight years a warrior, then one mistake while training for a secret turns her into a fugitive criminal, then a prisoner, then nearly killed. While all this is happening, her younger sister Evande is dealing with sudden changes of her own...Waiting for Halcyon to return after eight years, then helping her evade capture, then volunteering to do part of her sentence. All of this is a prelude to slowly revealed secrets about what Halcyon and her warrior partner were about to do, who steps in to attempt the mission, who is good, who is evil and where hidden relics of power are, ones that mean saving or losing the kingdom. Add in some fighting, a bit of romance and a satisfying ending, then savor. This is a fine YA fantasy, worthy of a place in any library where teens love well written fantasy.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Series Info/Source: I got a copy of this book to review through Edelweiss. This was a stand alone YA fantasy book.Story (5/5): This was a beautifully written fantasy that I really enjoyed. The story is told from the POV of two sisters; one (Evadne) who wishes she was a mage but is stuck working on her family's olive farm and the other who has chosen to join an elite military force (Halcyon). When Halycon shows up in the night in a panic and fleeing from something, Evadne does everything she can to help. Little do they both know where these actions will lead them.I was sucked into the story right from the beginning and didn’t want to put this book down. There’s an excellent blend of action, intrigue, magic, and politics here.Characters (5/5): I really loved all of the characters here. We are mainly involved with Halcyon, Evadne, and Damon. However, even the side characters are very well done. I loved the contrast between Halcyon and Evadne, they are two very different people but they display different types of strength throughout the story that I really admired. Setting (4/5): This is a fairly typical fantasy setting. I enjoyed the adventure into the heart of the mountain. The settings are beautifully described but don’t play a huge part in the story.Writing Style (5/5): This book is beautifully written and full of adventure, magic, light romance, and intrigue. The book switches POV between Halcyon and Evadne throughout and this works incredibly well for this story. The descriptions were amazing and the writing flows so well that the book was a pleasure to read.My Summary (5/5): Overall I really loved this fantasy story and loved all the characters as well. I would definitely recommend it if you are a fantasy lover. I plan on checking out Ross's other books as well because I loved this one so much!
