It is 58 BC and the mighty Tenth Legion, camped in Northern Italy, prepare for the arrival of the most notorious general in Roman history: Julius Caesar. Marcus Falerius Fronto, commander of the Tenth is a career soldier and long-time companion of Caesar's. Despite his desire for the simplicity of the military life, he cannot help but be drawn into intrigue and politics as Caesar engineers a motive to invade the lands of Gaul. Fronto is about to discover that politics can be as dangerous as battle, that old enemies can be trusted more than new friends, and that standing close to such a shining figure as Caesar, even the most ethical of men risk being burned.

History dressed up in an entertaining novel. I love history and loved this book and its narrator…I am listening to Mauis’ Mules 2 now. Intend to listen to all the books in the series.

I needed a second listening to fully appreciate this audiobook.
Mind you, that is not a bad thing.
I had a mental bias due to my thorough immersion of ancient Rome by Colleen McCollough's Masters of Rome series.
So far, Turney's series span 13 books, up to the battle of Pharsalus, with the audiobook versions about 3 books late. McCollough only used 2 books to detail the history, which is as good. Turney's expansion of the timeline, the battles and the characters made it all worthwhile.
I knew Caesar as a near perfect demigod with nearly no fault. Who stood far and apart even his peers.
So Turney's interpretation was jarring, but in an oddly good way. He made Caesar more relatable. Oh, he still was a gifted general but he has a lot more blemish and imperfections.
Fronto further placed Caesar to a level that one can actually understand. He showed Caesar can trip and make human mistakes, not unlike McCollough's Caesar who is more like a mortal god in every way (but I still love her Caesar).
The other characters give the series more vim and vibe, and the way the author gave them soul and flesh was also an excellent interpretation.
