About this audiobook

“I can’t imagine a more important book.”—Jeff Guinn, New York Times bestselling author

An explosive investigation into Word of Faith Fellowship, a secretive evangelical cult whose charismatic female leader is a master of manipulation

In 1979, a fiery preacher named Jane Whaley attracted a small group of followers with a promise that she could turn their lives around.

In the years since, Whaley’s following has expanded to include thousands of congregants across three continents. In their eyes she’s a prophet. And to disobey her means eternal damnation.

The control Whaley exerts is absolute: she decides what her followers study, where they work, whom they can marry—even when they can have sex.

Based on hundreds of interviews, secretly recorded conversations, and thousands of pages of documents, Pulitzer Prize winner Mitch Weiss and Holbrook Mohr’s Broken Faith is a terrifying portrait life inside the Word of Faith Fellowship, and the harrowing account of one family who escaped after two decades.

Very well written! At times it was a little tough to follow, but only because there were so many different characters and they were all "waking up" at different times and some multiple times.

The reader did it very nice job. Some places were a little rapid in pace, but otherwise very well done. A very intriguing informative look into the lives of cult members and their struggles.

Very well researched. Truly heartbreaking stories. I am glad i listened to it because i think it is an important story but i could not make it to the end.

Excellent expose of a “church” full of deceit, fraud, and mental illness. In 2021, it is so hard to believe that reason and logic are overridden by a narcissistic woman like Jane Whaley or her weak and simple husband. Abusing children should never be tolerated but it seems that the rural south remain as hick and backwards as they were while they were Confederate racists and slave holders.

Everybody should read this book, particularly those deluded under a glossy eye of religious dominance and oppression.

I’ve known about this cult for many years as I am a resident of Rutherford county. Through the years we have heard the reports but having them arranged in a timeline with personal stories really helps to shine a light on the awful things happening in our back yard. It is a powerful read and I thank Mitch Weiss and Holbrook Mohr for telling the world. Maybe something will be done to stop this madness.
