About this audiobook

‘DCI Matilda Darke is the perfect heroine’ Elly Griffiths

The second book in Michael Wood’s darkly compelling new crime series featuring DCI Matilda Darke. Perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride, Mark Billingham and Val McDermid.

When elderly George Rainsford goes to investigate a suspicious noise one night, the last thing he expects to find is a bloodbath. A man has been killed and a woman brutally beaten, left for dead.

The victims are Lois Craven and Kevin Hardaker – both married, but not to each other. Their spouses swear they knew nothing of the affair and, besides, they both have alibis for the attack. With nothing else to link the victims, the investigation hits a dead end.

The pressure is on for investigating officer, DCI Matilda Darke: there’s a violent killer on the loose, and it looks like her team members are the new targets. With no leads and no suspects, it’s going to take all Matilda’s wits to catch him, before he strikes again.

A really good storey with plenty of action. You get involved with the characters.

Story was ok but too much reflection by the main character, just kept fast forwarding through the boring bits.

    2.5-3stars..
This series is decent filler but nothing exceptional.. and there are some truly asinine behaviors.. 2/3rds if the way thru the book Matilda is going to get therapist to ask if it’s possible for a victim to “play dead”… WHY?!? Just why?!?! What kind of person, let alone a DETECTIVE, asks that question?!?!! Victims playing dead to escape are on the news nearly everyday!!
Another absurdity was the when a murderer broke down sobbing when he was told the name of the woman he’d raped.. bc that made her human… ok…
Narration is alright, though when she voices Matilda and her friend Adele, women in their early 40s, she voices them as though their in their late 60s+… it’s odd, made even odder by the fact that I swear she’s holding her nose to so as to make them always sound congested.
I’ll shive the series one more shot bc I blow thru 8-10books a month and unfortunately there just aren’t too many good ones out there and filler like this is a necessary evil.

It doesn’t matter what order you read these books because they are all the same storyline, the main character makes mistakes then redeems herself, she puts herself in impossible and dangerous situations and triumphs only to be berated by her boss and someone is always stalking her. The first time you read this it is interesting but I have read three of these books and now it is predictable, really can’t see myself reading or listening to another.

I found this book frustrating the women in it were painfully stupid and weak including the main character. Don’t think I will try another.

Excellent, although in many ways a repeat of the first instalment: Matilda blames herself for the death of her husband and the presumed death of Carl and struggles to cope, before pulling herself together at around the 60% mark and solving the case. The police procedural bit was very good, although SPOILERSI don't understand why Alice didn't report the man who threatened her to the police. For a while the plot seemed to explain this, but then a twist removed that reason...
