      Interesting perspective as the United States approaches the 250 year anniversary of the War of Independence and just passed the 200 anniversary of the end of the War of 1812. There is a tragic American Indian part of both wars. They lost on all fronts.

      to my mind, Tecumseh and Abraham Lincoln are unique examples of the "Self-made Man", the American ideal. The fact that one was white and the other Indian pale in comparison to their mutual achievement of attaining political power and then using it for the benefit of their people as a whole, and rising above the prejudices of their time, and their communities. The life of Tecumseh has been researched by Alan Eckert, as he said three times, once for his book "The frontiersmen", again for "Gateway to Empitr", and again for this purpose-built biography. Each time discarding received information and substituting stuff arising from better sources. This is the final word on the man whose life was tragically cut short by the battle on the Thames river in Ontario. Had he survived for the peace negotiations at the end of the war of 1812, Indians everywhere in America, would have been better off.This book is about how much the right man can accomplish in the political arena, with only talent. The book also includes material that really changed my concept of Simon Girty, who has been badly maligned by Zane Grey, in his acts of filial piety. Read it, and understand what a tragedy it was, that Lincoln and Tecumseh never met....one of the interesting "What ifs?..." of history.

      "A Sorrow In Our Heart" one of Eckert's historical novels tells the story of the Shawnee leader Tecumseh, who has been said by many and myself now to be one of the if not the greatest Indian leader of all time. Tecumseh came so very close to saving his people from total destruction by the whites on the eastern frontier of the young United States in the early 19th century. Ultimately, Tecumseh's death was not just a loss to the Indians' long struggle for justice against the Americans; it was the beginning of the end for their way of life. This was and is a great and a wonderful book, and history told as in this book was for me and perhaps for you hard to put down.

      Frustrating but interesting book about Tecumseh. Much of the book is buried in end notes, which I chose not to read after several hundred pages. In addition, the author is a history writer to his core, which means that he tells the story in vignettes that are almost always looks back--the story seldom unfolds, but is instead summarized in each little episode.
