Shut Up and Listen! is a true leadership roadmap to the summit of career success and satisfaction, featuring concise principles for entrepreneurs and business leaders at any level.
Tilman Fertitta, also known as the Billion Dollar Buyer, started his hospitality empire thirty years ago with just one restaurant. Over the years, he’s stayed true to the principles that helped him build the largest single-shareholder company in America, with over $4 billion in revenue, including hundreds of restaurants (Landry’s Seafood, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Morton’s Steakhouse, Mastro’s, Rainforest Café, and over forty more restaurant concepts) and five Golden Nugget Casinos. He’s also sole owner of the NBA’s Houston Rockets. This book shares the key insights that made it all possible.
In Shut Up and Listen!, Fertitta shares straight-talk “Tilmanisms” around six key action items that any entrepreneur can adopt today:
- Be the Bull
- No Spare Customers
- Change, Change, Change
- Know Your Numbers
- Follow the 95/5 Rule
- Take No Out of Your Vocabulary

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Biggest takeaway: never underestimate customer service. Does "no" mean "I literally can not," or "I don't want to"? This book will arm you with all of the necessary tools for success.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Very repetitive feels as if the author is bragging without providing useful steps to really be a successful business person. Felt more like an opinion book rather than this works for my company rather than for me.
The first half of the book felt fresh and new but only to be dragged out at the end. The book is easy to listen to but it's clear that it's a filler ( Story-driven book )
I disagree when the author mentions things about bringing outside members in to help the business, the truth is we all could need a bit of help here and there. Wish the author would share more advice to help us, more resources, or anything to latch on to besides the audiobook. Still very thankful and easy listen within two days.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a pretty straight forward book, not one filled with theory and over worded just to fill pages. I appreciate the direct nature of his approach, though I am sure it is not for everybody. I found it a great reminder to get back to paying attention to a few things that I have started to let slip. Not all chapters will have meaning for every reader, but the base principals are solid.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Tilman's expertise is invaluable and his delivery is firm and direct, as the title would suggest. His examples to back up the points he makes in the book are very detailed well thought out. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to develop their skills in business and in life.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The book was written in simple to understand terms, but it was not simplistic.
Tillman reminds us that life, family, business and pleasure have their seasons and it is for us to prepare for both.
The concept of preparing for the paddle resonated.
Implementation time now!1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5He’s very raw and that’s very important in getting exactly what he means
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What I'm implementing in this book.
1• cash reserve
2• borrow money when we don't need it
3• not putting my lifestyle ahead of my business
4• listen more to other people.
5• be the bull and be ready for any obstacles.
This is probably the best business book I've ever read in 2022 - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A must read for every entrepreneur ESPECIALLY first timers!
