About this audiobook

A man who can't read will never amount to anything — or so Nate Webber believes. But he takes a chance to help his family by signing up for the new Civilian Conservation Corps, skirting the truth about certain requirements. He exchanges the harsh Brooklyn streets for the wilds of Yellowstone National Park, curious if the Eden-like wonderland can transform him as well.

Elsie Brookes was proud to grow up as a ranger's daughter, but she longs for a future of her own. After four years serving as a maid in the park's hotels, she still hasn't saved enough money for her college tuition. A second job, teaching a crowd of rowdy men in the CCC camp, might be the answer, but when Elsie discovers Nate's secret, it puts his job as camp foreman in jeopardy.

Tutoring leads to friendship and romance — until a string of suspicious fires casts a dark shadow over their relationship. Can they find answers before all their dreams go up in smoke?

Ever Faithful, though an historical romance book, covers in detail, a lot of information about Yellowstone National Park and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC’S) during the 1930s Depression Era. Barnett’s research and love for our national parks shine throughout the entire book. And lest you think it would be hard to incorporate Biblical truths and insights into the narrative, rest assured, they flow naturally and logically into the tale. The staff of the various park jobs with their quirky nicknames are described in such a way as to make you feel every emotion they are experiencing in their lives. In addition, there is a minor mystery to be solved-guaranteed to surprise you, too!One of my favorite animals is the American Bison, and Barnett gives the history of their diminishing numbers, leaving me thankful that this majestic creature did not disappear from our nation.Karen Barnett’s book, Ever Faithful, is an account of faith, overcoming very challenging obstacles, forgiveness and love. It is a story you will not want to end! As an added bonus, the Author’s Note at the end gives more information and history of the era and Yellowstone. I wasn’t aware Ever Faithful was part of a series, so it could very easily be read as a stand-alone.I received the book from Waterbrook Multnomah. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

This series just keeps getting better. I loved the characters. I loved to learn about the men and women that worked for the national parks. This story makes me want to visit these areas. I really enjoyed reading about the way Elsie started to teachNate to read. This story has a lot of twists and turns. I received a copy of this book from Waterbrook Multnomah for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

I have loved my bookish trips back to the early days of the National Parks with Karen Barnett’s Vintage National Parks series. First I journeyed to Mt. Rainer, then to Yosemite, and now with the 3rd installment, I traveled to Yellowstone. Ever Faithful, a book set amidst the beauty and wonder of the oldest of the parks, is my favorite of the three. Filled with vivid descriptions, memorable characters, and a message of hope and healing, this historical romance receives a highly recommended rating from me.I have never been to Yellowstone, but Barnett’s detailed descriptions sent me to the interweb to check out the awesome sights this park contains. I loved visiting via the book, and now have another destination to add to the bucket list. The Yellowstone backdrop with its mud pots, geysers, hot springs, and majestic forests and rivers was perfect for the development of characters Nate and Elsie. Both characters view themselves as imperfect — either too scarred to be beautiful or too dumb to ever amount to anything. As their relationship grows, each helps the other to see the beauty and purpose that God envisioned when He created them. The historical setting with the CCC corp and the early days of the parks was very interesting. I loved that the author includes endnotes to let the reader know the facts behind her fiction. One of my mother’s older brothers worked in the CCC, and Ever Faithful gave me a glimpse into his experiences. While billed as an historical romance, there is adventure and mystery — something for just about everyone! For a road trip read or a staycation, Ever Faithful is the perfect choice. This fun book kept the pages turning! The only negative was that it ended too quickly!Highly recommended.Audience: adults.(Thanks to Waterbrook for a complimentary copy. Title: Ever Faithful (A Vintage National Parks Novel #3)Author: Karen BarnettPages: 352Year: 2019Publisher: WaterbrookMy rating is 4 out of 5 stars.Nate Webber has been chastised his whole life for “not amount to much” of anything. He is forced to enlist in the Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, when he is caught by the police taking the blame for his brother’s crime. The officer offers him the chance to experience more than the city’s mean streets by enlisting, or his brother would go to jail at the age of fourteen. Nate enlists and is shipped off to Yellowstone Park. Upon arrival, he meets a park ranger’s pretty daughter. He learns she will be teaching some basic courses for the men of the CCC to help them learn to read and write. He is in awe of the beauty he gets to see. He works hard at manual labor and soon is offered the position of foreman, but if he takes the position he has to write weekly reports and read. He can’t let anyone find out his secret because his family desperately needs the extra money the foreman position offers. What can he do?Elsie Brookes has dreamed of being a teacher all her life. She has been saving up for college and will finally have enough for college after this final summer at Yellowstone. She has to concentrate on her career as no man wants to marry a scarred woman like her in her opinion. The summer gets underway and for the first time she has not one, but two men interested in her romantically. She still plans to go to college, so how should she deal with these two men? In the meantime, someone keeps starting fires around the park. The first one is small and quickly put out, but each fire grows larger in size. Fire during this dry summer would prove dangerous and devastating for the park. Who would do such a thing? With such vivid descriptions of the scenery, I feel like I just took a vacation to Yellowstone! There is definitely a feeling of “you are there” in this author’s prose. Having been a park ranger herself, the author uses that to paint a picture of God’s creation that surpasses other authors. I have enjoyed all three books in the series with a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty God has given us to experience. Both characters have difficulties trusting but for different reasons. When they allow God to give them the ability to trust and depend on Him, they begin to really live life to the fullest. I’m looking forward to what comes next from this author!Note: The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility.

Elsie Brookes dreams of being a teacher and for the past four years she has worked as a maid during the tourist season at Yellowstone National Park to save money for her college tuition. It is now 1933 and the Depression has affected everything, including the tourist business, and Elsie fears that she may lose her job. If this happens she knows that this will cause another delay in her goal to become a teacher. And then, a group of young men arrive at Yellowstone as a part of President Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps. Along with their chance to work and earn money there is also the opportunity to receive educational instruction. Elsie is chosen to teach these men and one of them is a young man from Brooklyn, New York. Nate Webber is a hard worker, very capable, and he shows a promising future but he has a secret. As Elsie teaches him and the others, she realizes that Nate can barely read and write so she decides to tutor him on the side. As they become better acquainted, it is plain that Nate is growing fond of Elsie but she resists any relationship because she has her own secret.Ever Faithful is the story of two people who have each experienced tragedies that have left them scarred emotionally and physically. Elsie's physical scars have caused her to feel unattractive and unappealing; Nate's unfortunate youth and his lack of education make him feel unworthy. It is through their friendship that they learn to see themselves through the other's eyes and they begin to realize their self-worth.This story is a romance but it has so much more. The history of Yellowstone National Park is sprinkled throughout the story and there is also a strong element of faith. The Golden Rule, grace and forgiveness are stressed and we are reminded that God judges the heart and not outward appearances.Karen Barnett is a former Park Ranger and her knowledge of the National Park System is apparent in this book and the two previous books of her Vintage National Parks novels. Barnett offers a glimpse of the parks as they once were and encourages us to get out and enjoy these national treasures as they are today.Ever Faithful is a wonderful read and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Christian romance and historical fiction.I received an Advanced Readers Copy from the author and Waterbrook and all opinions in this review are my own.
