About this audiobook
Known mainly for his tales of adventure, this work of science fiction by Jack London is set in a post-apocalyptic future.
It's 2072, sixty years after the scarlet plague has depopulated the planet. James Howard Smith is one of the few survivors of the pre-plague era left alive in the San Francisco area, and as he realizes his time grows short, he tries to impart the value of knowledge and wisdom to his grandsons. Through his narrative, we learn how the plague spread throughout the world and of the struggles of the handful of survivors it left in its wake.
"The Scarlet Plague" was originally published in London Magazine in 1912.
Jack London
Jack London was born in San Francisco on January 12th 1876, the unwanted child of a spiritualist mother and astrologer father. He was raised by Virginia Prentiss, a former slave, before rejoining his mother and her new husband, John London. Largely self-educated, the teenage Jack made money stealing oysters and working on a schooner before briefly studying at the University of Berkeley in 1896. He left to join the Klondike Gold Rush a year later, a phenomenon that would go on to form the background of his literary masterpieces, The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906). Alongside his novel writing London dabbled in war reportage, agriculture and politics. He was married twice and had two daughters from his first marriage. London died in 1916 from complications of numerous chronic illnesses.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story. A lot to learn about what might be possible and how to move on.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good story but it ended before the end of chapter 7.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Nice, shortish story, interesting to see how many hits and misses London had with his vision of future technology and society.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5This could have been interesting bit the narrator ruined it. Hie read in such a monotone voice that I kept zoning out on the story. Also the audio book ended in the middle of the story! Oh well. O say don't bother with this; find something better.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Pretty boring. Didn't finish listening to it because I zoned out enough times to know it wasn't going to keep me interested until the end. From the other reviews on here about the book, I'm glad I didn't stick with it, since the book apparently cuts off mid-sentence at chapter 7. I'll avoid any future books from this narrator too, because he's bad enough that I could mistake him for a robotic computer voice without too much effort.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Poorly read, an hour shorter than the other copies I have seen and also the last chapter is a chunk of one of the earlier chapters. Do not bother with this version.
