About this audiobook
*** The top ten bestselling author ***
Discover a brilliant story of love, danger, courage and betrayal, from the internationally bestselling author of The Survivors.
1953, the South of France. The fragile peace between the West and Soviet Russia hangs on a knife edge. And one family has been torn apart by secrets and conflicting allegiances.
Eloïse Caussade is a courageous young Frenchwoman, raised on a bull farm near Arles in the Camargue. She idolises her older brother, André, and when he leaves to become an Intelligence Officer working for the CIA in Paris to help protect France, she soon follows him. Having exchanged the strict confines of her father's farm for a life of freedom in Paris, her world comes alive.
But everything changes when André is injured - a direct result of Eloise's actions. Unable to work, André returns to his father’s farm, but Eloïse’s sense of guilt and responsibility for his injuries sets her on the trail of the person who attempted to kill him.
Eloïse finds her hometown in a state of unrest and conflict. Those who are angry at the construction of the American airbase nearby, with its lethal nuclear armaments, confront those who support it, and anger flares into violence, stirred up by Soviet agents. Throughout all this unrest, Eloïse is still relentlessly hunting down the man who betrayed her brother and his country, and she is learning to look at those she loves and at herself with different eyes. She no longer knows who she can trust. Who is working for Soviet Intelligence and who is not? And what side do her own family lie on?

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This book was a slow read for me. I dreaded finishing it, but I was determined. The characters were not well developed, and I cared little for any of them. I believe the main character was meant to be tough and determined but seemed more bullheaded and stupid, moving from one traumatic event to the next. The plot is like àn overcooked stew -- yucky.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very interesting to see how the war even the Cold War can change people to do things they never thought was possible. Even though this is fiction, some of what’s happing now resembles what is in this book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A totally unbelievable story. People doing things that would never have been possible,, and a political stance which is jingoistic and almost religious. It had its moments of suspense, but I grew tired of the heroine, and her stupid behaviour.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Lovely writing and made me want to keep reading. Loved it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow....this was a book I couldn`t put down. Very very captivating, and well written. I hated to see the story end. Thank you for putting a story like this out here for us. I`m sure it`s fiction, but sure could be a true story too. also, thank y9ou for reading it soooo well. I listen all day when I work here and this sure makes my day enjoyable and times flies by.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great history, just a bit hard to follow, but enjoyed it
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Got lost in a cple of places and had to go back you really have to concentrate on this book but besides that it was a great book. Well worth the read
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Interesting about the cold war, good research. Great ending. ?
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Could be a good enough story if the author hadn't been paid per adjective, metaphor and simile.
The narration is horrible! Every french word is so over-pronounced that I couldn't concentrate on the story...ridiculous. affected; and really...every
