About this audiobook
A captivating novel of family, fame, and religion that tells the story of the seventeen-year-old daughter of an evangelical preacher, star of the family's hit reality show, and the secret pregnancy that threatens to blow their entire world apart.
Esther Ann Hicks—Essie—is the youngest child on Six for Hicks, a reality television phenomenon. She's grown up in the spotlight, both idolized and despised for her family's fire-and-brimstone brand of faith. When Essie's mother, Celia, discovers that Essie is pregnant, she arranges an emergency meeting with the show's producers: Do they sneak Essie out of the country for an abortion? Do they pass the child off as Celia's? Or do they try to arrange a marriage—and a ratings-blockbuster wedding? Meanwhile, Essie is quietly pairing herself up with Roarke Richards, a senior at her school with a secret of his own to protect. As the newly formed couple attempt to sell their fabricated love story to the media—through exclusive interviews with an infamously conservative reporter named Liberty Bell—Essie finds she has questions of her own: What was the real reason for her older sister leaving home? Who can she trust with the truth about her family? And how much is she willing to sacrifice to win her own freedom?

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Loved the story, but found the flow/editing to be lacking. Was let down in the way everything unraveled.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The story was engaging, but the writing style was a bit simplistic, kind of like it was written by a teenager. I also have a pet peeve about the way male readers imitate the female voice, but that’s an issue with lots of audiobooks.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The Book of Jessie tackles many of today's swept under the rug hot buttons. Reality television will never be the same as Esther Ann Hicks plots and schemes to marry Rourke, a young man who may be an all American boy, but who has his own demons to vanquish.
Add the story of Liberty Bell to the mix. One that mirrors many of Essie's (Esther) own angst and inner turmoil. All that glitters is definitely not gold. For me the author was trying to bring the reader to a point where they get to know an individual before passing judgment or making an assumption about the life you think they live.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A beautiful story, but not necessarily told the best way. Definitely some unbelievable and corny bits.
