      Doug turns out not to be the man Natalie thought he was which she discovers when they take a hiking trip through the Adirondacks for their honeymoon. There's danger lurking in them there woods, and things go from bad to worse quickly. The characters were pretty annoying, especially Natalie's stupid 13-year-old niece who should never have been included. Still, the story was suspenseful and kept my interest. I did find the aftermath of their ordeal to be quite implausible. I hated Milchman's book "Cover of Snow," but found this book to be much better.

      Wow, wow, wow!!! You can bet your bippy that I will not be going camping, canoeing or hiking anywhere in the near future or let's just emphatically say NEVER!Thirty minutes after finishing this book, my heart was still racing, as it had been for about the last one and half hours of the book.I have been a fan of Jenny Milchman ever since I met her on her first cross country tour with her first book and her whole family at my local independent, MBTB here in Houston. I was mesmerized by her stamina and gumption to undertake this journey. And, of course, I loved her first book "Cover of Snow".This book also did not disappoint. I was enthralled at the very beginning and sped right through. A couple spending their honeymoon canoeing and camping in the Adirondacks? Seriously? What's wrong with a beach? My utter distaste for Doug, the groom, and Natalie's husband began very early and held fast throughout much of the book. Especially when his true colors and agenda came to light.Their journey was doomed from the beginning. Natalie being an amateur and Doug, not that much better, took on these thousands of acres as if there were little or no huge dangers at all in those mountains. Silly people and Doug was a dumba$$ for even setting it up. However, the real reason why he did so is brought about early in the book which only added to my dislike of this man.The perils they faced were horrendous and if it wasn't for bad luck, this couple would have none, none at all.However, at the end, Doug was proven to be only human with an self established ego that was quickly rendered not true and he realized it.An excellent read that I sped through, enjoyed and one that my heart was glad that it was over. The double duty that it was handling and with my age, could have been disastrous. Ha!!Definitely one to not be missed if you love action, adventure and constant suspense set in the wilderness of the Adirondacks where anything can happen.Kudos to the author, Jenny Milchman, and thanks to Sourcebooks Landmark and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

      This book by Jenny Milchman is whirlwind of action, without leaving a single dull moment. It felt like the newly wed couple, honeymooning to the Adirondacks, continues to deal with one disaster after another. As you progress through the story you can see how this affects each of them individually as well as their relationship with each other. Their personalities and dynamics continue to change and grow with Nat, the narrator, providing good insight into her own experiences.

      For the beginning half of the book I was conflicted about how I felt towards it. It kept me reading and felt very interesting but the constant disasters and life-threatening situations seemed somewhat too much. However, I also recognize that this is the exact reasons people may have liked the book. There were some situations and occurrences that seemed unlikely and took me away from the plot a little bit. However, overall, I enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys outdoorsy activities or has a trip planned as well as anyone who loves a book that never stops with the action and can be quite a page turner. I look forward to other books by this author that hopefully also explore settings and situations other books may not be daring enough to explore.

To say this novel is cringe-inducing is an understatement. As each page is turned, the reader becomes more and more involved and terrified. This is the story of Natalie and Doug Larson, newlyweds who will be spending their honeymoon in the Adirondacks on a canoeing and camping trip. Doug had convinced a reluctant Natalie to get back to nature to celebrate their union. It soon becomes clear to Natalie there is another reason why they find themselves on six million acres of wild forests. One night, they come across the murdered corpse of someone Doug knows and fear drives them further into the forest, without food, water and shelter. To make matters worse, they start feeling like they are being watched. Who and why will be the questions that will keep you glued to the page. Will they ever leave the Adirondacks? This is the fourth novel for Jenny Milchman and I look forward to reading more of her work.

      Although all Jenny Milchman's novels (so far) take place in or around the Adirondacks and may share a character or two, each is a standalone and can be read in any order. So, if you haven't read her books, WICKED RIVER would be a great place to start. Or, if you have, if you loved her first book so followed as she wrote subsequent books, you will be impressed with WICKED RIVER and you may even decide this one is her best.Natalie and Doug, just married, honeymoon on a river and in a forest in the Adirondacks. But nothing goes as planned. First Natalie is horrified to learn what Doug's had intended to do and wonders if she knew who she married. Then as they become more and more lost and near death in the forest, a stranger comes along. But what does he really want and what will he do to keep them? Suspense in WICKED RIVER begins even before Natalie's and Doug's "honeymoon," even at their wedding. No kidding, the reader will be sitting at the edge of her seat throughout this book. Even if some may feel that the end is a little corny, no one will deny that this story is truly a thriller. We should be seeing it on the bestseller lists.

      Worst honeymoon ever!!!!Doug and Natalie decide to spend their honeymoon canoeing through the Adirondacks. Natalie isn't very outdoorsy and has no idea how to read a map. She's happy they have a GPS to follow, until it falls into the river and all they have is a map for navigation. After a few days, they decide to abandon their canoe and hike out. What should be a two day hike turns unto much more. They find a dead body and realize there is someone else out in the woods with them. There's a crazy man, Kurt, living by himself in the forest and he wants some company. Really, he wants people to live with him and isn't above some cannibalism, especially when the hikers he meets wants to leave. Eventually Natalie finds out the real reason for their honeymoon and why they are traipsing through the wilderness instead of soaking up sun on the beach. Honestly, after Natalie learned the truth I was surprised she was able to forgive so easily, but I guess near death experiences bring people together.This is my first book by the author and I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more. I liked the story line, characters and writing style. I have to say, Mia, Natalie's niece, was not my favorite. She seemed more like twenty instead of thirteen. Her fascination with Doug's groomsman was creepy and every time she left her parents' side, she always got into some kind of trouble. How did she come across Kurt so quickly when she was only on the trail for what seemed like a few minutes?The book does have some twists and turns and definitely recommend it. The book is creepy, especially the parts about Kurt, and a thriller.       Books like this are the reason I don't go camping. Read it, and you might not be willing to go either!

      Natalie and her brand new husband Doug have decided to spend their honeymoon camping in the forested mountains of the Adirondacks. At least, she tells herself they've decided. Mostly, it seems Doug has decided and she went along with it. Unable to read a map, Natalie's misgivings become even more bothersome when their GPS is lost and then they turn to outright terror when they come across a dead body. Little does she know that their adventure has really just begun. What happened to the dead man they found? Will Natalie and Doug make it out alive? You'll have to read WICKED RIVER to find out!

      At first, I didn't think I would enjoy this story. Natalie is wishy-washy and what kind of woman doesn't stand up and say she doesn't want to sleep on the damn ground on her honeymoon? That's the thing though, all of the characters change and grow throughout the story and that had me rapidly turning these pages.

      The only real problem I had with this book was with Natalie's 13 year old niece Mia. I think her sections only served to slow down the pacing. Also, many of her actions were just not believable. Everything else about this story rang true to me-the award winning couch sitter and non-camping extraordinaire that I am. Books like these only prove to show me that I'm correct in staying far away from the wilderness. I've read too many horror books for that.

      I am so glad I tried something a bit out of my wheelhouse because WICKED RIVER was, (mostly), fast paced and WICKED fun! Recommended to fans of mystery/suspense and thrillers.

      The first chapter was so captivating, that I was invested in the story right away and stayed engaged throughout the book. Briefly summarizing the story, a couple of newlyweds decide to spend their honeymoon camping and hiking through the Adirondacks for a week. The problem is there was an incident right before the wedding that keeps getting glossed over and it was a pretty big detail in regards to the newly married couple. As they venture further into the wild, the romance of the honeymoon soon turns into a nightmare involving betrayal, murder and the fight to survive. Newlyweds Natalie and Doug end up on a horrifying adventure just to stay alive and despite their problems, they have to stick together in order to do so.Natalie is the only one with any family involved in her life and her 13 year old niece, Mia, is anxiously awaiting Natalie’s return from her honeymoon. Unfortunately, she is the first to figure out something is wrong. Honestly, I felt the story could have been told just as well without Mia. Her storyline seemed to take a bit away from the ending.Though the subject matter is grim, this is a fairly clean book as far as violence and sexual content. I enjoyed this nature thriller and recommend to others who like thrillers and the outdoors--just don’t read this right before a camping/hiking trip.Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for providing me an advance copy to read and offer an honest review.

      Three and a half star rating.If you must have a trek and/or canoe trip in the wilderness then make sure you don’t get lost and that you know your companion very well which is something Natalie and Doug should have done. Definitely a honeymoon to remember! Natalie was such a doormat and was as irritating as a gnat as she lets everyone else make all the decisions and as for Mia, well the story would have been so much better without her sections & after the first one or two I just quickly skimmed them. I did like the descriptions of the Adirondacks and the feeling of menace as this pair stumbled from one crisis to the next - maybe they should have gone to Hawaii!

      Wicked River by Jenny Milchman is an action-packed, suspenseful adventure.

      After the wedding of their dreams, Natalie and Doug Larson set out on their honeymoon trip in Adirondack Park. While most people choose a relaxing vacation spot, Doug convinced Natalie that a canoe trip in the isolated wilderness is the perfect beginning for their married life. Natalie immediately has reservations about agreeing to his suggestion, but she gamely follows along. She also allows Doug to avoid answering her questions about a strange argument between his groomsmen and two strangers which took place prior to their wedding ceremony. However, Natalie soon comes to regret both of her decisions when  their idyllic honeymoon goes terribly wrong.

      Despite their three year relationship, Natalie has a brief case of wedding jitters right before they exchange their vows. Shrugging off her doubts, she is excited about starting their life together although she wishes she had not agreed to their wilderness honeymoon. Doug manages to smooth over her reservations and once they begin their journey, Natalie is pleasantly surprised by her change of heart. Despite a few unusual occurrences,  their trip is going well until Doug loses a valuable piece of equipment.  His suggestion to change course is out of character, but Natalie is so relieved she does not question his decision. It is only when things begin to go so terribly wrong that Natalie realizes she needs to trust her instincts.

      While initially Doug comes across as a loving new husband, there are warnings that all is not quite right with him. He shrewdly sidesteps Natalie's questions and he effortlessly overrides the few objections she raises. Doug's answers to her questions are evasive and Natalie is easily satisfied with his partial answers.

      Wicked River is a mostly fast-paced novel although there are a few spots where the storyline drags just a bit. Natalie is a likable and sympathetic protagonist but she is much stronger than she gives herself credit for. Doug is not exactly hero material and readers might not agree with the novel's ending. With plenty of action to propel the storyline, Jenny Milchman brings the novel to an exciting and somewhat dramatic conclusion.
