About this audiobook
On the last day of eighth grade, Maggie begins to dream of finding a way to escape the drudgery and confinement of life in the hollow and establish her independence. Her plan begins to fall in place when she enters high school and discovers she has a natural talent for excelling in shorthand, typing, and other business classes. Meanwhile she spares no effort in helping her family continue to survive despite their poverty, a less than fertile few acres, and a family history of instability.
The typical spoken language, folkways, traditional beliefs, and religious practices are skillfully woven into this portrait of Appalachian family life. The author's sympathetic insights into mountain culture combined with memorably etched characters and events create a realistic reflection of Tennessee mountain life during the decade following World War II.
Maggie's life takes an unexpected turn when her cousin JD reveals a dark secret that could shatter the family. Maggie struggles to maintain her dreams of a better life amidst the many trials that will test the grit of this Appalachian Daughter.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was an excellent book about Appalachian folks and customs told through the eyes of a girl coming of age. Growing up in the mountains of northeast Alabama and marrying a man from the Cumberland mountains in TN I could relate to many of the customs and sayings.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Appalachian Daughter is a heart touching, coming of a age story set in the beautiful mountains. So much of this story rang true to me as I was born and bred in the foothills of the Appalachians. My (late) mother would have been almost the same age as Maggie in the time period of this story. It was a wonderful look back at the many things my mother experienced growing up in a large family on a farm. Much of the colloquial sayings are still expressed today. The daily “mundane” activities, as well as, the big events of life depicted in the story - I heard first hand as my family members shared (mostly) beloved memories. The characters in this story felt genuine and relatable. It flowed well going from year to year as the inevitable changes of life played out for the family. I would love to read a sequel!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Engaging characters that are believable. Historical family story from early 1900s when people struggled to feed themselves. This book tells it like I believe it really was for some poor southern families.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A beautiful coming of age story of a you g woman growing up in East Tennessee around the time of the Korean War. The oldest of eight children, Maggie is a talented and driven Young lady. Great read
