I enjoyed this story a lot. I was extremely disappointed at the Dowager Countess. I am glad the Duke had his family name restored. Nice book

Hunter is a good writer and this was enjoyable, but not terribly special or memorable for me, so 3 stars seems fair.

Adam Penrose, recently returned from France, is seeking the truth about the accusations of treason that led to his father's suicide. He is also being courted by the Cheswick family with whom his family has a long-standing feud. When he is offered a marriage alliance, he changes the demands to the older sister. However, Clara enjoys the independence her father's legacy has given her and has refused to marry. As the two become closer they also discover details about their families that could drive them apart.

Sometimes when I am rearranging my bookshelves (not done as often as tidiness would dictate), a book falls off the shelve in such a way that I assume the universe thinks I need to read it right then. That was the case with this historical romance. After literally months of stop and start kitchen renovations, I was fiddling with the books from the bookshelves tucked under the counter when this one fell into my lap. And heaven knows I needed a happily ever after kind of read what with the frustrations of the construction (which, incidentally, is still ongoing) so this was exact kind of book I needed to read. Madeline Hunter knows how to draw entertaining characters, add in sly humor, and wrap up with an ending that suits the story and she does just that in The Most Dangerous Duke in London.Adam Penrose is the Duke of Stratton and he's the titular most dangerous duke in London by virtue of his reputation for duels and a quick temper. He's recently returned from France and wants to clear his late father's name of the vile whispers of treason that have swirled around since shortly before his father took his own life some years ago. Adam has an inkling who might be behind the rumors and he is determined to have his revenge. And he thinks that punishing the late Marwood's family might just be very appealing once he catches a glimpse of Marwood's daughter, not the young and perfect Emilia though, the on who is presented to him as a peace offering between the families, but instead the older daughter, the headstrong Lady Clara Cheswick, who has no intention of ever marrying, and certainly not a man who thinks ill of her beloved late father. Adam pursues Clara even as he continues to try and uncover the truth about his father. Clara, for her part, while attracted to Adam, is determined to maintain her independence (she inherited an unentailed piece of land) and to continue to hide the fact that she secretly funds the publishing of a progressive journal written by women. The chemistry between Adam and Clara is intense and juicy. The scenes where Adam courts Clara while she resists are entertaining indeed. In fact, their relationship is quite the game of chase. But while it might sound as if Clara's wishes are not taken into consideration, Adam does give her the time and leeway to choose for herself (although he never doubts that she will marry him eventually). For much of the novel, the search for the source of the whispers about Adam's father's possible treason, rumors easy to believe in part because of Adam's French mother, takes a large backseat to the ongoing frisson between Adam and Clara. And once Adam gets closer to the truth, it jeopardizes their burgeoning relationship. The uncovering of the truth is well done and genuinely surprising even if smaller aspects of the truth were pretty evident long before the final reveal. Set just after the Regency period in England yet still in the shadow of Napoleon, this is a book with two equals as main characters, great chemistry and steamy bits, and a plot I haven't seen too much of before. Historical romance fans will find a lot to enjoy here in this start to Hunter's Decadent Dukes series.

Good book about a man bent on revenge and a woman determined to keep her independence. Adam has spent the last five years in France, where he took his mother to escape the ugly rumors of treason after his father's suicide. While there, he gained quite a reputation for engaging in several duels over his father's honor. Now he is back, determined to find the truth, clear his father's name, and exact revenge on those responsible. He's pretty sure that the Earl of Marwood, neighbor and long-time family enemy was the one who started the rumors and kept them going.Adam is more than a little surprised when the Dowager Countess invites him to call on her and the new Earl. He's astounded when she proposes ending the long-standing feud in the time-honored tradition of marriage. She offers Adam, the hand of her youngest granddaughter, Emilia. Besides the fact that he feels she is way too young for him, he suspects the Dowager has ulterior motives. However, his first sight of eldest granddaughter Clara piques his interest.Clara was the only child of the Earl's first marriage, and she was his favorite. They spent much time together, with him treating Clara more as a son than a daughter. On his death, he left her property and income enough for her to be independent, which suits her just fine. Clara uses her wealth to secretly publish a women's magazine and is quite adamant that she has no plans to marry.I loved the first meeting between Clara and Adam. He is attracted and intrigued, and she wants nothing to do with him. He initially plans to court her in an attempt to discover what she knows about her father's involvement against his father, but it doesn't take long for him to want Clara for herself. Adam is quite determined to have her, and Clara is equally determined to retain her independence. I loved seeing Adam find ways to spend time with Clara that she can't avoid. He is quite devious at times, and it begins to pay off as Clara discovers that there is more to him than his reputation. I really liked the way that he appreciates her intelligence and wit. Clara is unaccustomed to such a thing, and it isn't long before they have developed a pretty solid friendship. Adam is still determined to marry her and turns up the heat on the attraction that simmers between them. Clara is still determined to retain her independence but considers entering into an affair with him. What they have together is more intense than either expects, cementing Adam's resolve and causing Clara to reconsider her opinion. I loved that they have honest conversations between their bouts of lovemaking, with Adam forthright about his motivations and Clara about her fears regarding marriage. The question comes down to whether the truth about Adam's father will tear them apart or bring them together.I enjoyed the mystery behind his father's death. I ached for Adam who had been the one to find him, and who resented those who made his mother's life so miserable. I completely understood his desire to find the truth, no matter what it took. It was interesting to see the reactions of various people to Adam's presence back in England, with the scene at the race being especially intense. There was one person I suspected knew more than they were telling. An unexpected twist exposed the truth, and I loved how it all worked out.The secondary characters were an intricate part of the story. Topping the list were Adam's friends Langford and Brentworth. I loved the strength of the friendship among the three men. Even after five years apart, they were able to pick right up as if they'd never been separated. I loved their support of Adam in whatever he needed. A garden party put on by a bachelor duke? Of course. Advice on women? Gladly. I'm looking forward to seeing those two get their stories. Clara's family was also vividly drawn. Her brother was obviously young and without the experience to deal with his older sister. Emilia was sweet and loved her sister. The Dowager was flat out scary at times, and I was truly impressed by Clara's ability to stand up to her. I liked Clara's friend and partner, Althea, and loved the way that she helped Clara with her rendezvous with Adam. I'd liked to see her get a happy ending of her own. I also loved the blunt Lady Farnworth. She was especially awesome when she stood up to the Dowager.

Originally posted at The Reading Alley and The Romance Reviews.4.5 "Revenge or Love?" Stars!Lovers of independent heroines and the family feud trope will be delighted and intrigued with Madeline Hunter's latest novel, The Most Dangerous Duke in London. Featuring a colorful cast, with various motivations, and demonstrating how an inheritance can make a difference in the marriage needs of women of the day, this historical romance set in the 1820s in England is sure to pique your interest. Moreover, for those that enjoy a bit of suspense with their romances, there is a secondary plot that revolves around the mystery surrounding the hero's father's suicide and missing jewels that also brings in a potential espionage connection.Lady Clara Cheswick, the oldest and favorite daughter of an Earl is now set for life due to the generous inheritance that her father left her. Having always enjoyed a special connection to her father, Clara got to do things (such as learn how to shoot) that should in that day only have been reserved for a son. Part of this atypical upbringing was also her father's understanding that she wished to never marry. Now at 24 years of age (virtually on the shelf for the marriage market of the day) and with an inheritance to boot, she uses her finances to clandestinely publish a journal called Pernassus, which featured political news as well as essays from a feminist perspective and reviews of things more of interest to women, like theater performances and travel destinations. However, its success depends on her anonymity and the anonymity of many of its authors.Adam Penrose, the Duke of Stratton, is known as a dangerous duke. Having fled England for his mother's homeland of France shortly after his father's mysterious death, he has just recently returned. However, his dangerous reputation of having been involved in several duels while in France, precedes him, and the neighboring family (Clara's family) who had been rumored to have had a feud with his father (and possibly having been involved in his death) is on alert. Rather than risk his wrath, Clara's grandmother (and her brother the new Earl) arrange a meeting to propose a truce with Adam. As part of the truce, they have offered up the hand of her much younger sister. However, at first sight, Adam decides that Clara would suit him much more. Thus ensues the cat and mouse chase where Adam proposes to Clara but she just rebuffs him instead. However, their chemistry sparks other more physical interests. Could there possibly be a HEA under the circumstances? Moreover, what are Adam's true motivations (to ruin Clara, her father's favorite daughter, or truly to find married bliss with her)? And just what transpired all those years ago that led to Adam's father's death? I enjoyed both the romance and the suspense of this book (though I will say that both require your dedicated attention and patience until the very end to finally find their resolution). This was my first experience with Madeline Hunter, but it definitely will not be my last. I look forward to exploring more of her works soon. Moreover, The Most Dangerous Duke in London was a great start to a series about three dukes that are members of the Society of Decadent Dukes (thus the name of the series). I look forward to reading about the other two dukes, Brentworth and Langford, in future books to come in this series.Source: Review copy provided for review purposes.

A great start to the trilogy. We begin with a Duke wanting revenge, and a woman, Clara, from that family who is already on the shelf seems like a good target, but what starts out as one thing soon becomes something much more enticing. Unexpected mysteries and secrets are made know which are very intriguing. A fun read which is highly entertaining.

Madeline Hunter is one of my favorite regency romance authors and I had been looking forward to this book for a while. She did not disappoint. This is the first book in a new the new Decadent Dukes series. In this book, we are introduced to The Most Dangerous Duke in London, Adam Penrose, Duke of Stratton. He is portrayed as dark and brooding and others are afraid of his temper. Adam has recently returned to London after spending time with is mother in France. All of the ton have heard rumors about Adam's family and those of his neighbor the Earl of Marwood. The secrets are revealed towards the end of the book. Believe me, they will keep you reading. The Dowager Countess of Marwood invited Stratton to their estate after years of no communication. She wants Stratton to propose to her beautiful granddaughter, Emilia. She has been bred to be the perfect society wife, however Lady Clara catches his eye. Clara is Marwood's daughter from his first marriage and is firmly on the shelf. She wants no part of marriage and is not really interested in suitors. She would rather spend her days with friends, writing and riding horses. However, Adam is quite taken with Lady Clara and decides to propose to her. The chapter leading up the the proposal is one of my favorites because it is hilarious. The way Hunter writes the dialogue and describes the emotions of Clara had me laughing out loud. At this point you will not want to put the book down because you will be dying to know the ways that Adam tries to woo Clara. Clara wants nothing to do with Adam and is intent on getting her own life started as an independent woman. But Clara does not anticipate the chemistry between her and Adam. (Oh man, the chemistry between these two is scorching). I love their interactions. The sex scenes are tastefully written. In fact, they are a bit more tame than some of Hunter's books. But still HOT! You can tell throughout the book that the author knows a lot of history as the details are so accurately described. The colors, the smells, the atmosphere. This is story telling at its finest. The romantic gestures will make you swoon and you may also fall in love with Adam's friends. The Duke of Stratton is currently my book boyfriend. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a historical romance with a HEA. I also love the cover. The cover artist added a bow to the cover making it seem like a gift. This book is definitely a gift for romance lovers. This is the perfect book for some fun summer reading. I'm looking forward to the next story in this series.
