Not a Creature Was Purring is the 5th book in the Paws & Claws Mystery series, but the first I have read. What a delight to discover this series! Holmes is coming home to Wagstail, Va to celebrate Christmas...and his engagement. Holly, his former girlfriend is trying to be supportive, but his fiancée is a horrible, spoiled rich girl and the rest of her family is just as bad. When Holly finds a body, everyone is under suspicion. A clever, cozy mystery set in a wonderful town that knows how to truly celebrate Christmas, this was the perfect story for the season!

I didn't realise I had another book in this series to read until it arrived the other day; nor did I remember it being a Christmas themed one. One it showed up in my mailbox, of course I had to move it up the top of the TBR pile and get it read before Christmas. In my post about her previous book, Mission Impawsible, I complained about the additional character and the emerging love triangle. Now, I don't know if a lot of other people felt the same way or what, but this book neither included that character nor referred to him in any way. Davis simply acted as though Mission Impawsible never existed in the Wagtail timeline, and as things end in this book, I doubt he'll be popping back up. The mystery was much better plotted too, although the murder a horribly sad one, something not typical of cozies. All in all, it was a very solid cozy read with lots of effort at Christmas spirit (the murder in this one makes it hard to feel like the effort succeeded). Not sure if I'll use this for a festive square or not, but if I do, I'll update my post accordingly.

Not A Creature Was PurringByKrista DavisWhat it's all about...OMG! Wagtail, Virginia is the place to be over the holidays...especially if you don’t want to leave your pet at home. This book is the newest addition to this series. It is the first one that I have read and it truly engaged me from beginning to end. The Inn, the food, the animals are all so much fun to get to know. The series seems to center around Holly and her pets Trixie the Jack Russell and Twinkletoes the cat. And Trixie has a nose for finding dead people. Actually so does Holly! Why I wanted to read it...The cover was enticing, it’s a holiday book and I wanted a cozy well written mystery. I loved this book so much I bought the first one in the series and it is just as delightful. I might like it even more because it’s the story of how Holly met Trixie. What made me truly enjoy this book...What made me become so engaged in this book is this author’s writing. It’s a good story and it’s one that I really did not want to stop reading. There is just enough murder, mayhem and dysfunction to make this book delightfully fun! Why you should read it, too...Readers who love well written cozy mysteries should grab this book for some cozy holiday reading! This is the kind of book that cries out for hot cocoa, cookies, warm flannel jammies and a cozy chair by the fire. “I received an advance reader’s copy from the publisher through NetGalley and Amazon in exchange for my honest review.”

Not a Creature was Purring by Krista Davis is the fifth book in the A Paws and Claws Mystery series. Holly Miller is looking forward to Christmas in Wagtail, Virginia with her Oma and large circle of friends. Then Holly discovers that Holmes Richardson has brought his fiancé, Norma Jeanne Blume along with her extended family home for the holiday. Holly was hoping Holmes would realize Norma Jeanne was not the right woman for him and see that the perfect partner for him is right under his nose. Dale Thackleberry, Norma Jeanne’s grandfather and CEO of a pet apparel company, is in the Christmas spirit and distributes gifts to local children (despite his families grumpy and haughty demeaner). Rupert Grimpley, though, disturbs the entire town with his giant blow up Grinch (with lights and music). Birdie Dupuy, Holly’s aunt, is particularly disgruntled over this new edition. Holly is out walking Trixie when she takes off towards Rupert’s Grinch. Inside, Holly finds the body of Dale Thackleberry. Holly is asked to put her sleuthing skills to work and track down the killer. Can Holly uncover the culprit before Christmas? Is there a chance for Holly and Holmes? There is if Holmes’ grandmother, Rose and Holly’s grandmother, Oma have anything to say about it.Not a Creature was Purring was just delightful. It has lovely, well-developed characters and a gorgeous setting. Who would not want to live in Wagtail? A place that welcomes people and fur babies. Ms. Davis brings her characters and town to life with her descriptions. I found the story to be well written and have a nice, steady pace. My attention was grabbed right away, and it was held until the very last page (something I rarely say about a book). It has two mysteries, Christmas spirit, secret Santa elves, a Christkindl Market, adorable dogs and cats, a couple of quirky characters, plenty of drama, a dash of humor and a touch of romance. I found the murder mystery to be complex with a unique murder weapon. There is misdirection, a couple of twists and several possible suspects (including Aunt Birdie). I believe many readers will be surprised by the killer’s identity. I am giving Not a Creature was Purring 5 out of 5 stars (I loved it). While Not a Creature was Purring is the fifth book in the series, it can be read alone. There are human and pet recipes at the end of the book. Personally, I find A Paws and Claws Mystery series delightful and have yet to miss each new installment. Not a Creature was Purring is an entertaining cozy mystery that will put you in the Christmas spirit.

It’s Christmastime in Wagtail and the festivities are in full swing. But not everyone is in a holiday mood. Much to Holly’s dismay, Holmes is celebrating his upcoming marriage to a girl everyone in his home town dislikes. In fact, her extended family and step-relatives can’t stop squabbling among themselves. Their family businesses are in trouble, and sniping at each other is the holiday pastime. But when a member of this dislikeable family is found dead, fingers are pointed at several people, including Holly’s Aunt Birdie. This delightful Christmas cozy is sure to put you in the holiday mood. Likable characters, an intricate plot, and a lovely setting are all combined in this well-written tale. It even contains recipes for people and pets!
