- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Although a good read, I must write"It Should've Been Me" by Reshonda Tate Billingsley is brutal and full of hate. It put me in a somber mood. Reading how far beyond civilized thought the might can go is frightening. It's about a sister's love for her brother and her parents. When June Bug is rejected by one woman, it hurts so badly that he doesn't wish to go on living. His sister sees his pain in this situation and in other situations where he doesn't fit in or is afraid to make it in the big city. His mother feels the pain so deeply that she dies. There are clouds all around this man. He thinks there is no one who can release him from these awful, painful situations.Although his pain is great, it's not unrecognizable. Most of us have known someone who has been seemingly rejected by the girl or woman they love or the boy or man. Who is to blame? Perhaps, no one intentionally meant to cause hurt in a life. However, the ugliness of heart pain is that it lingers and moves about until finally, there is one who is found who wants to take revenge. It's a sad novel. There is a background of theater, actors and actresses. People manipulate the innocent, the weak ones. These are the other ones who also can't find love and want to experience it so badly. I am thinking of Randy and Justin, two very weak men. I am thinking of a strong woman named Gwen. The book "It Should've Been Me" by Reshonda Tate Billingsley and Victoria Christopher Murray is a heart breaker. It is also a look at the flip side of human nature. The side we keep hidden. The side that is greedy, the side that would cheat if given the chance and the side which loves God after we've gone and done what we wish to do. Because we are fully aware of His everlasting mercies. He's waiting there to forgive no matter our motives. Boy, do we know it.It's an easy novel to read about marriage, the second time around and men not knowing how to read a woman's signals. The characters tell their stories in alternate voices. However, the novel is disturbing. Real life is traumatizing too. So read this one while your feeling strong not at your weakest moment and learn that life isn't about purposely setting out to make others pay for what has caused you pain. Your life and my life is fragile. Handle it with God care.
