- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The plot was typical Gardner. Much easier to figure out the tv show than the novels. The narrator is one of the best I have heard. Few can match his ability to come up with so many voices!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Solid, entertaining mystery from relatively early in the run of the Mason novels. The mystery revolves around a crusty (and unsympathetic) millionaire whose grand-daughter may or may not be the real thing. How does the titular stuttering bishop fit into it? There are, of course, courtroom pyrotechnics (though unusually, Gardner telegraphs the point that Mason is going to use -- rare that I actually spot one of them). Also unusual is the fact that not only Mason gets involved in a punchup (breaking the nose of a crooked private eye), but so does Della Street! The ending is slightly rushed, but the pieces do fit together. Recommended.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Can a bishop stutter? Both Perry Mason and Della Street have their suspicions when one that does stutter show up and talks to them about an old murder, a very rich man and a girl that may or not be a heiress. Things get just more complicated after that. Years ago a marriage was dissolved after a murder charge was leveled against a woman for what looks like an accident. Two girls claim to be the heiress of a huge estate. And then the man that owns it and that plans to give it to one of them gets killed. And our favorite lawyer is in the middle of the whole thing. Old secrets, detectives that are not bothered to cheat their clients (unlike Drake and his men) and the usual clever thinking by Perry save the day - as usual. But the story makes a lot more tweaks and turns than usual and at the end that is one of my favorite stories so far in the series - everyone seems to be trying to either frame someone else or lie about something (and occasionally kill someone).
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Another good story. Perry cuts a few corners -- keeps things interesting. I'm interested to know how the character evolves.
