About this audiobook
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) has quickly become a controversial topic in recent years. Whereas other books on the subject describe the condition as inherited, Dr. Gabor Maté believes that our social and emotional environments play a key role in both the cause of and cure for this condition. In Scattered, he describes the painful realities of ADD and its effect on children as well as on career and social paths in adults. While acknowledging that genetics may indeed play a part in predisposing a person toward ADD, Dr. Maté moves beyond that to focus on the things we can control: changes in environment, family dynamics, and parenting choices. He draws heavily on his own experience with the disorder, as both an ADD sufferer and the parent of three diagnosed children. Providing a thorough overview of ADD and its treatments, Scattered is an essential and life-changing guide for the millions of ADD sufferers in North America today.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I have been a teacher for 29 years. I also work with children with developmental delays and challenging behaviors and this is the best book I have ever read/listened to - and I have read hundreds of books over the years. Every adult, with or without children in their lives, needs to read this book. Dr Mate writes with brilliance and compassion and in understandable, non-judgmental, practical ways about the science behind brain development and functioning and what adults have done, individually and culturally, to interfere with optimal brain development and functioning in children. Throughout the book, Dr. Mate also details what we can do to support children with “scattered minds” and minimize this malady in children in the future. While doing all the above, Dr. Mate helps adults with scattered minds understand THEIR brains and behaviors as well. Pediatricians, teachers, parents, bosses/managers, young people and adults who struggle in their day to day functioning and careers all need to read this book. There is such hope for children and adults who struggle IF we understand why they struggle and what we can do to help support and prevent such struggles in present and future generations. How I wish I would have had this book in my life 29 years ago before becoming a teacher and mother of three now grown children. I am extremely grateful to have this book in my life now. I will be giving this book to everyone I know, it is that important. I have since read Dr. Mate’s other two books and highly recommend these as well.
