About this audiobook

Fitting into the Old World isn’t going very well for Boulder boundary witch Allison “Lex” Luther: she may have earned a place in a vampire’s service, but now it seems as if every supernatural creature in town has found a reason to hate her. And when Lex and her partner are assigned to investigate the suspicious disappearance of two vampires during the night of the full moon, they find themselves with more questions than answers.

Was it murder…or mutiny?

The crusade for answers will lead Lex all over the Colorado Old World, from a prison cell for a broken werewolf to a haunted Denver brothel. And when Lex determines the responsible party, the hunt is just beginning: something has been awakened in Boulder, something as old and powerful as it is terrifying. Only the woman with death in her blood can stop what’s coming.

This is book 2. Search for 'Boundaries Crossed', book 1. Great series, I'm enjoying the connections/references to her other series.

This book can be read as a stand alone but I recommend starting with book 1. Great storyline, plot, and character development. Lots of drama and action. A budding but fragile romance. Growing friendships and the worst kind of deception. Highly recommend the series.

Boundary Lines by Melissa F. Olson and narrated by Kate Rudd is book two in the series. Our witch learns more tricks that are pretty cool, werewolves come into the story, giant sandworms type creatures are eating people and our witch is assigned to get rid of it. More ghost activity and much more! This is a non-stop supernatural book! Plenty of suspense, surprises, twists, creatures, wonderful plot, new characters, danger, humor, and endless entertainment! The narrator performs the characters flawlessly! 10 stars for sure!

This review covers the Boundary Magic Series by Melissa F. Olson: Book1 Boundary Crossed; Book 2 Boundary Lines; Book 3 Boundary Born.

I read the three books in this series back to back and something that struck me about them is how well-planned it felt. I expect bigger and badder powers and enemies in each book, and this book had them so no surprise there. To me, each of those increases felt logical and as if the series had left room for it or foreshadowed it. It just felt very planned and I appreciated that.

Another thing I appreciated was that the love story in this series was first and foremost between Lex and her family and most importantly between Lex and her niece. Family is everything to Lex, it motivates everything she does. Her family is huge and sprawling and they populate her world. It's nice to have a woman in an urban fantasy not be alone and lonely.

Okay, yes, there is a love story, at least in that Lex falls in love. But it never dominates the true story of Lex doing whatever it takes to protect her niece. Actually, it doesn't take center stage much at all, to the point that when Lex did think about it I was sort of confused by her strong emotions because there hadn't been the intense buildup I expect from UF.

    Other things I liked:
The witch stuff, how they were organized, how magic was treated.
Lex's new friends who teach her magic.
Lex's family and their number and variety.
That family was always the most important thing in these books, from start to finish.

This was the second book in the Boundary Magic series by Olson. I really enjoyed this book, this has been a solid urban fantasy series that has a good storyline and makes for an entertaining read. I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook is well done. The narrator does a great job with characters voices and portraying emotion. I would recommend listening to on audiobook if you enjoy audiobooks. This book is mainly a mystery, Lex is trying to solve a couple mysteries. The first mystery involves the disappearance of two vampires on the night of a full moon. The second mystery involves a mysterious regurgitated pellet found in the forest; it is huge and contains human remains. I enjoyed how these mysteries were unwound and ended up intertwining. The larger story about Lex’s Boundary Witch status and her magic capabilities also continues and makes some progress. I also continue to enjoy Lex’s military background and the unique perspective that gives her on things. There are a variety of interesting characters in here that I enjoyed reading about. I also enjoyed the addition of ley line magic and crazy mythical creatures. Overall this was a great addition to this urban fantasy series. I continue to enjoy the story, the mystery, the magic, and the characters. If you are a fan of investigative urban fantasies I would recommend checking this series out.

I like the series because the action is so much more important that the dull, predictable romance. I loved the battle between Lex and her friends and a giant hungry serpent cornered inside a hot springs cave open to the public.

What a great follow-up! Boundary Lines is an entertaining story that kept me on the edge of my seat from page one. Between the dialogue, the romance, and the fight scenes, there are some truly awesome moments here. The culprit is predictable, but overall, it's still a very fun read. I enjoyed it even more than the first book, and I can't wait to get my hands on book three!

I found the first book in this series to be a very entertaining read. I was compelled to keep reading, and blitzed through it in a matter of days. So when it came to my attention that I had some Kindle credits from using priority shipping, I figured pre-purchasing this book would be a good decision. Either way, it wasn’t like I was paying for it.I was once really into the whole “urban paranormal” writing when I was younger, but eventually got tired of reading authors whose voice was inauthentic, or who wrote about characters I just didn’t give a crap about. I enjoy the way Melissa Olson writes: her characters are flawed and interesting; they speak with a very contemporary voice. There are pop culture references, and a lot of information about Boulder and the surrounding areas that really brings this particular setting to life. It’s as if it really is taking place right now.I did notice a lot of people liked the lack of information because they read “Malediction”, but for those of us who didn’t, it’s seems we missed key pieces of information. Why bother naming this the second book in a series if it’s got a “companion” read that you’re supposed to read before it? Really, I didn’t even know that there was a companion book, but I am of the opinion that if there is a series of books and a side story introduces new concepts and ideas, even a little touch up on those ideas or concepts would be appreciated for readers.Overall it was just kind of stale to me. This is the second book I’ve read by this author, while most people seem to be long-term fans. While I read quickly through the first book, this one was very easy to put down and I often found myself reading the same paragraph over and over while my eyes glazed over. I am completely fascinated by Lex’s ability, and I would love to learn more about it. I feel like we were given the bare minimum information to keep the story progressing forward, and nothing else. There was so much dialogue and action that the plot itself sped by, without delving into inner-personal character relationships or even the overarching plot of the entire series (boundary magic). After having read the second book, the only character I really care about is Lex, and I guess Simon—a LITTLE bit. Usually by the second book in a series, I like a lot more characters than that because they each spend enough time with the hero that I’m sort of forced to care about them. That being said, I’ll continue reading this series because I realize a lot of authors have that one book in a series that you just don’t like, but you enjoy all the other ones. Maybe that will be the case this time?

This second book starring "Lex" Luther who is a new boundary witch. Boundary witches are the bad guys of the witch world because of their control over life. Lex has sworn an oath to serve the vampire boss of the area because she has agreed to protect Lex's niece who is a Null and of great interest to the various people into the Old World. This really isn't helping her relationship with the witches who have an uneasy truce with vampires. The problem in this one has to do with unrest between the vampires, the witches and the werewolves. Something is affecting their magic. Maven, the vampire boss, is trying to solidify her position after killing the previous boss. She sends Lex and her vampire enforcer and Lex's love interest Quinn to investigate the disappearance of two vampires who were monitoring werewolf activities. I liked this story because we find out more about Old World politics as Lex does. I also like that Lex is single-minded in her desire to keep her dead twin's daughter safe. The cryptid monster was intriguing too.

A page turner all the way through

This paranormal urban fantasy also has elements of mystery and thriller books, which kept me reading past my bedtime! Lex and the supporting characters feel like real people, though there is not enough of Quinn in this book, and I was hoping they would all survive. Can't wait for another.

Received an ARC from the author in exchange for a review. I love Olson’s Old World stories, however this one started out a bit too slow, but it does a good job at setting the stage for future books.“Lex” Luther has finally accepted she comes from Old World stock – at least for the most part and is committed as ever to keeping her niece Charlie, who is a null, safe. She has given her allegiance to the local vampire master, in order to have protection for Charlie. Even if it means alienating her new friends in the witch coven she truly should belong in, well if it weren’t for the fact that she has death magic and everyone is too scared to befriend her. But as she finds out more about her magic, she begins to learn more about the three good friends she does have, things she’s not sure she wanted to know. But all that will have to wait, because there is a new threat in town and she has no one else to turn to.Lex has a lot of baggage, and it’s amazing she’s still standing on two feet most days given her history in the military, losing her twin sister to a murdering lunatic, saving the town she won’t give up on, and most of all protecting the one person she loves most in the world, her niece. But Lex gets right back up and lives another day to fight the local evil that seems to think Charlie is their salvation. Lex promised her sister she would take care of her family and that’s what she’s doing.I love Olson’s world building and I really enjoyed the Scarlet Bernard series, but this one is moving a bit slow for me. Lex is a great character, stronger than anyone in her situation would probably be but it took a long time to get to any action in this one, despite all the running around she did to set the stage.Granted, when you’re dealing with Wolves, Vampires and Witches everything is fantastical, however this one seems a little over the top with another extremely fantastical monster just waiting in the wings and kind of felt like a repeat of a 90’s B movie.I definitely plan to keep reading this series, and look forward to the next one. Hopefully we’ll get into more about Lex’s magic, what she can do with it, and how she can show the local clans that she’s not their enemy. I’d like to see more interaction with her dead sister, who she can talk to in her dreams given the Blood magic Lex holds and a bit more about how she will navigate her relationship with Quinn, (her Vampire partner) and the man she is falling for.Definitely worth reading, however start with Boundary Crossed – or even better start with Dead Spots, the series that started it all.

Magic is running kind of weird in Boulder, CO and when it appears that some new monster is eating people, they need to figure out what it is, why it’s suddenly existing and a plan to take it out. At the same time, this wild magic is making people of the Old World do things they don’t necessarily want to do and Lex needs to figure out how to stop a war of retaliation before letting her vampire boss, Maven, know what she’s doing. This story takes place right after the crossover novella, Malediction, where Lex learns how her sister died. It’s not necessary to read that story first as the important aspects are explained in this book. We meet two more of the Pellar older sisters as Lex attempts to be accepted by this clan. And we meet a new character from out of town and I hope she’ll consider moving to the area as I’d definitely like to see her again. Lots of action, emotions and some detective work. And speaking of detective, Keller still wants Lex to be the answers to a number of unsolved cases.I find the story, situations and the characters to be interesting, especially since they all still have some reservations about each other.

I enjoyed getting to know Lex and the other characters of the Boundary Magic series in book one, BOUNDARY CROSSED, and BOUNDARY LINES made me like the world and the characters even more.Lex has to figure out what is causing the magic to surge in Boulder with the help of her partner. Along the way we get to know some werewolves, we learn more about the characters and we also get a little bit of romance. On the subject of romance, I do like Lex's growing relationship with the vampire. I hope they can keep up the chemistry in future books. As far as secondary characters go. I think Maven is an interesting character. She can put the smack down, but I find her to be very likable and Lex and her have a very good working relationship so far. Simon and Lily continue to be a huge help to Lex. They both grew on me right away in book one and I always look forward to seeing what they will bring to a situation. One thing that is really bothering me is that Lex still hasn't told Charlie's dad what is going on and what role Charlie plays in the supernatural world. Keeping him in the dark is not only dangerous for Charlie, but can lead to situations that just happened to happen in BOUNDARY LINES. I hope we don't have to read a whole other book with him in the dark and I hope that he takes the news well. There was a good amount of action in BOUNDARY LINES. There is a pretty big battle towards the end and it was very well put together. I like that Olson ties her Scarlett Bernard series into this one. If you happen to like that series or are looking for something new, give the Boundary Magic series a try.* This book was provided free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
