About this audiobook
The penultimate volume of the mighty Riftwar Cycle
War rages in Midkemia but behind the chaos there is disquieting evidence of dark forces at work.
Jim Dasher’s usually infallible intelligence network has been cleverly dismantled; nowhere is safe. He feels that the world is coming apart at the seams and is helpless to protect his nation.
Quiet palace coups are underway in Roldem and Rillanon; and King Gregory of the Isles has yet to produce an heir. In each kingdom a single petty noble has risen from obscurity to threaten the throne.
Lord Hal of Crydee and his great friend Ty Hawkins, champion swordsman of the Masters’ Court, are entrusted with the task of smuggling Princess Stephané and her lady-in-waiting, the lovely but mysterious Lady Gabriella, out of Roldem to a place of greater safety. But is there any safe haven to be found?
Meanwhile, Hal’s younger brothers Martin and Brendan are attempting to hold the strategic city of Ylith against an onslaught of Keshian Dog Soldiers, and a mysterious force from beneath the sea. The Kingdom might lose Crydee and recover; but if Ylith falls, all is lost.
An unknown player appears to orchestrating these conflicts. Can Pug and the Conclave of Shadows track down this source before Midkemia is destroyed?

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A high stakes gamble to allow the winner of a high school raffle to narrate this climactic novel doesn’t pay off
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Didn't like this narrator, pronounced words differently than the usual guy. Honestly would have skipped this audio book because of this, only listened because its the second book in a trilogy. Book was great though. Peter joyce should narrate all the books
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I was hoping that there's a Peter Joyce edition somewhere after so many complaints... The accent just isn't suitable for this series after so long ..
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Dreadful pronunciations and clearly had not listened to any previous books.
What was the editor/reviewer thinking ?? - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The story was great of course, but I didn't like the American accent for all the characters. Although a lovely voice, it was the wrong choice.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A fun read that moved a long at a break neck pace but unfortunately the author decided to leave this on a cliffhanger with zero plot points closed. I am really glad I waited to read this until the series was finished or I would have given this an even lower rating.
3.5 Stars for a fun story but I really don't recommend reading this one unless you are ready to finish the series now... - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5So here we are at the penultimate entry in the epic Riftwar saga. I'm glad to see Feist is continuing his return to form with this book being strong from start to finish. Everything is finally starting to come together with (I believe) most of the major players appearing. I'm very glad for the return of Nakor, one of my favourite characters in the series.
The book had some flaws though. It needed a much better editor to go over it with a fine tooth comb. There were quite a few words missing, sentences had to be reread to make sure I understood what was meant. As well as some mix up with Pug and Magnus.
But for all that I loved it. At the same time I can't wait for the last book but dread it at the same time as it means the end has come.
Go Pug! - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The story was fun, but as I'm sure everyone else has mentioned, this is easily (easily) the most poorly edited book I have ever read. Punctuation, wrong words, entire incorrect drafts of chapters!!! inserted accidentally...Feist should be mortified. However, what is the point of having a publisher these days if not to make sure things like this dont happen? HGe could just self-publish, sell it on Amazon, and likely do just as well. Yeesh. Really a bummer and a letdown coming up to the last book in the whole cycle next spring.
