About this audiobook
When studying mysterious creatures called cryptids, the line between fact and fable sometimes blurs. Believable finds-like the Piltdown Man and the Cardiff Giant-may turn out to be clever hoaxes. And impossible fictions-like a 44-foot squid and a living "missing link," the coelacanth-may be found swimming today's oceans. The Earth's remote regions and the water's murky depths may still harbor undiscovered marvels. Reports of Bigfoot-like creatures spring from the wilds of every continent. And tales of super-sized reptiles abound in the world's rain forests and jungles. From proven frauds to startling realities, dozens of cryptids-like Champ and Nessie-come alive and receive balanced treatment. In this CYBILS Literary Award nominee and Junior Library Guild selection, Kelly Milner Halls, Rick Spears, and Roxyanne Young take kids and their parents on an imaginative and fun-filled romp through the history of cryptids. Ed Sala's masterful narration helps listeners ponder some intriguing possibilities. ". a delight for casual browsers and for would-be cryptozoologists alike."-Kirkus Reviews ". Halls, Spears, and Young obviously had a grand time pulling up creepy critters to feed readers' fertile imaginations."-Library Journal

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A pretty informative but easily understood book about different cryptids, including bigfoot, loch ness, and some lesser-known ones. Also has a section about supposed cryptids that actually turned out to be real, like the Onzo and the Giant Squid.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The authors of Tales of the Cryptids present an extraordinarily well-crafted introduction to the field of crypto zoology, or the study of legendary creatures. The authors discuss such elusive figures as Sasquatch and El Chupacabra, highlighting historical arguments and evidence, photographic and otherwise. They begin each chapter with an illustration of one of the monsters they will discuss, and a narrative that dares readers to imagine what it would be like to meet one of these beasts, perhaps while taking an innocent stroll through the woods. The authors consult a number of experts and introduce eccentric contributors to the field, such as the great P.T. Barnum and proprietors of crypto zoological museums. This is a fabulous reference book for young readers, but also enjoyable to browse from cover to cover. The variety of prose formats, pictures, and illustrations together build an entertaining and informative book, suitable for emerging and reluctant readers.
