About this audiobook
But nineteen-year-old Michael Morrow isn't like the rest of his family. He doesn't take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees. Michael pines for normalcy, and he's sure that someday he'll see the world beyond West Virginia. When he meets Alice, a pretty girl working at a record shop in the small nearby town of Dahlia, he's immediately smitten. For a moment, he nearly forgets about the monster he's become. But his brother, Rebel, is all too eager to remind Michael of his place . . .

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5i enjoy horror but this felt very very slow. you can see the ending coming at about the halfway mark. i wish that the characters of the family, their motivations and their interactions, had been elaborated on more. as it is the parents just feel somewhat one-dimensional.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Damn. This book got to me. I almost didn’t want to keep reading it because the whole time you just have this ominous “oh no, what’s going to happen?” Feeling but it was so interesting and kept moving forward that I would have to read just a little more. It’s such a not happy book that I hate to say I enjoyed it but I did?

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5On the face of it, this novel is a compelling tale of a backwoods axe-murder family from one of the children’s perspective. On a deeper level, the novel is a fascinating exploration of the cascading effects of abuse within families; e.g., how abusive parents perpetuate violence in their children, how children develop into different roles within an abusive household, and how siblings become poisoned against each other because of their parents’ dysfunction. Really great read and I can’t wait to try some of Ahlborn’s other works.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5GREAT READ!!!! This book was so awesome and unbelievably sad at the same time. Great twists and turn. Wonderful imagery. I felt like I was right there stuck in the dismal, terrifying life lived by this family in the gray, hot and depressing Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. JUST WOW!!! One of the best books I’ve listened to in a few months! And because I have long daily commute, I listen to A LOT of books!!!!!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Blown away!!! Ania Ahlborn is gonna be Stephen King level if she keeps going.
The twists have twists that twist. I did not anticipate the ending. This is my second book from her. Her books start fast and never stop.
And at this point, if she writes a menu, I want to read it!1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Beautiful, horrible, gut wrenching! Absolute page-turning perfection. I loved/hated this novel.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This novel had a realism and a natural flow that you want from a novel. The events are not far fetched. You BELIEVE the horror. While seed scared me more, this one had me glued to the characters. They were compelling. I couldn’t stop listening.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a really, really twisted book but in a good horror kind of way. I felt torn between feeling bad for the main character as a product of his environment and thinking he deep down liked being part of the family. This is Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets The Hills Has Eyes.
The final twist will blow your mind!1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was more psychological torture than horror. So heart breaking and gut wrenching

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Listened to the audio book form of this, doubling the length of time required to "read" it. Still consumed it in under two days. Pausing just long enough to leave this review before beginning another Ahlborn masterpiece. So glad to have found this amazing author!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow...Whoa....Im telling you now, this book is a trigger for anyone who has dealt with domestic violence, child abuse, kidnapping...Beware. I really dont know what to say about this book. Whomever this author is, I really would like to know what was her/his inspiration behind writing this book? The narrator did an outstanding job. Im really not into male narrators doing female voices; but, this narrator actually did a great job with the female characters. This book was disturbing as hell!!!! Lol.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of the best and most brutal horror novels I’ve ever read. I ignored my family and other obligations until it ended.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I was promised a disturbing book and it definitely was. It wasn’t a fun or wild ride though. Just kind of sad and slow. The first 80% of the book was just boring and super slow. The end was predictable but picked up at least so there was some action. If you want to be bummed out and like very slow burns then this is for you.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A wonderfully dark, shockingly violent and deeply disturbing tale of a family built on abuse and depravity. It kept me enthralled until the beautifully twisted ending.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow. This is what nightmares are made off. This book is full of the kinds of horror that will stick with you forever. Just wow! Well done!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Very good book, but not for the faint of heart. Quite disturbing, graphic and heart breaking. Had a hard time finishing. You will definitely need to read, listen to or watch something light hearted after finishing; just to try to get some of the images out of your mind.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was amazing. I was blown away by the end.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Really enjoyed, but not for the squeamish. If you like this one, try Mongels by Stephen Graham Jones.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Deliciously dark. Poignant & unique. Perfect ending too. My 2nd book by this author.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book was rec'd by many people saying it was nightmare enducing and would generally mess me up. I; however, was not impressed. Yeah, the story was messed up, and the ending was so bleak, but this was just okay. Without completely spoiling, this reminded me of episode 15 of Supernatural, "The Benders." There's a bit more to it than that, but if you know, you know.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Brother by Ania Ahlborn is about abuse and family secrets. It features an isolated family that murder young girls in order to satiate their mother's bloodlust. While one of the brothers dreams of a normal life, the other is keen to remind him of where they come from, that their family's lifestyle relies on his obedience. It's a compelling story with twists and turns, some of the true horror made clear only in hindsight. There are many reasons to sympathize with these characters, but the story never let's you forget the fact that these are the monsters.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely wonderful read - story is like a car crash that no matter how much you want to look away from, can’t. The author manages to invoke such a feeling of gloom, hopelessness and despair that becomes suffocating and manages to make you care for even the evil characters - and I found myself hoping for a happy end for Michael. Absolutely thrown by the ending/twist, which I just didn’t see coming - absolutely brutal and bleak end that felt like teetering and then finally being shoved off a ledge. Absolutely could NOT put this down - wow.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dark twisted! Really enjoyed reading this book! More bizarre as story went on.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book was ok, nothing special. It was basically the Texas chainsaw massacre of they also stole a child to raise for the fun of it. The ending was pretty predictable, but then, I read a lot of horror. Maybe if you're used to reading thrillers, this book will be more of a shocking surprise.
