About this audiobook

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there' s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate' s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe-- especially those closest to Kate. As Roland' s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she' ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear

Ilona Andrews

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian, and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored four New York Times and USA Today bestselling series: the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, rustic fantasy of the Edge, paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and Innkeeper Chronicles. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

    Captivating Read!

The gang's all here. We finally get to meet Roland. Hugh shows his traitorous face, and Kate goes from one flaring fire to the next. Curran is away on pack business for a good portion of this book, but he is never far from Kate's thoughts.

There is a bonus short story at the end of the book, called Magic Test. It's a cute read featuring Julie and her possible next school.

This adventurous tale keeps your interest from beginning to end. I loved it and can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Another addition to Kate Daniels series. This was a highly entertaining read, however I wish there is more Curran in the story.

Curran is out of the city so Kate has to deal alone with the newest Hugh's game. If she fails, the result will be war that can destroy the whole city. On top of that Kate has to deal with the pack politics.

As I said I wish there is more Curran in the story, his interaction with Kate is one of the best things about this series, especially now when they are finally together. But there are some other interesting aspects of this book, like Robert who is a fascinating character on his own and Ghastek story.

And I definitely liked the ending. The decision Kate makes when finally meeting her father makes her an even more complex character. And the last chapter changes everything and pushes me to read the next book imminently.

I'm so blown away by this book that I don't know where to begin! If I could give it ten stars, I would. It's almost impossible to review without spoilers so I'll keep it simple. I loved everything about this book. he big confrontation that Kate's been dreading is inevitable, there are troubles in Wolf Clan, a meeting between the People and the Pack Alphas goes poorly and the People declare war against the pack. To make matters worse, Curran is away on business, leaving Kate to handle all the mess. From the first chapter, I was either chuckling at the humor, on the edge of my seat, or fighting back tears. Yes, it was that good. Questions were answered, mysteries were revealed (with quite a few shocking surprises), and we get some interesting information about several characters, old and new.

When I read the first book, I never imagined it would grow into such a brilliant story. You don't want to miss this series!

I got this book on a Friday and had it finished by Sunday. Oops. Oh well. I guess that means it was a good one.

So, this book did not feel like 7th out of 10. It felt like the end of a series. I can see where the series can continue, but the conflicts and resolutions in this one were much more epic than the previous books. Kate really takes charge of her life. No more living in hiding or fear. Or at least, no showing fear. And she has to do a lot n her own as well, without Curran or Andrea or and of her parental figures.

The fight scenes were still grisly. The details of the world were still great. The characters were appropriately complex. Saiman, disappointingly, did not make an appearance, but Ghastek played a major role. Overall, a great ending to a major arc of the series. I hope the fallout from this book makes great stories for the next books.

Oh my! This book was non-stop action. I laughed. I cried. I worried. I fell in love with the characters again! The love that Curran and Kate share is phenomenal and a good reminder of how adults should always be honest with those they love; it usually helps to have a partner! Kate has grown in emotional maturity throughout this series and she reaped the rewards of that hard work in this book. The only negative comment I have is how surprising it was to see Kate commenting on how much she missed Curran. I was so use to the hard nosed, ball breaker, no holds barred KD that I was a little (& I mean a little) disappointed. I'm looking forward to the next book and am wondering if we have heard the last from Hugh or Landon. Hhhmmm.....Kate's life is never dull. ;)

‘There is a storm gathering on our horizon. We will make a stand, but I wonder if it will matter in the end.’In the world of Kate Daniels, the return of magic has left technology an unreliable resource in a dangerous world where vampires, werewolves, witches, and other paranormal beasties roam. Kate Daniels has always been able to hold her own, however, a being more powerful than her has just learned of her existence and he’s coming for her: her father, Roland. When Curran is forced to leave the Keep for a diplomatic trip, Kate is left in charge and struggles to not only maintain control but to keep everyone around her safe from the warpath Roland is on to get to her.I positively adored the first five installments in this series, which I read pretty much read back to back, all to end up being massively disappointed with the sixth installment in 2013. There was a bunch of unnecessary drama that seemed so out of character for those that I’ve come to know and love and there’s nothing I love less than unnecessary drama. It was still an entertaining installment but enough to make me go on a Kate Daniels hiatus. I’ve been trying to catch up on some series and I’m on a major Urban Fantasy kick lately so I took the plunge and while I felt this was far better than Magic Rises (because no unnecessary drama), it still amounted to nothing but filler for me. But damn was it full of action and full of some of the best side characters that I sure hope get a bigger share of the spotlight in future installments (I’m looking at you Desandra). We might have been short Curran for the most part, but Kate, Desandra, Derek, and Ascanio were one hilarious bunch when you threw them all together.Desandra shrugged her shoulders. “Hey, Kate? Have you thought of walking up to Hugh and telling him that he’s got the biggest dick ever?” She spread her arms to the size of a baseball bat.“No, you think it would work?” I asked.“It’s worth a try. May be he’ll be so happy you noticed his pork sword, he’ll forget all about trying to kill us.”Pork sword. Kill me now. “I’ll think about it.”Ascanio began patting his clothes.“What?” Derek growled.“Looking for something to take notes with.”Can’t forget to mention Cuddles either.“What the hell is this?” Desandra asked “This is Cuddles. She’s a mammoth donkey.” Derek grinned, leaning on the fence. “Do you have any self-respect left?”“Nope.”So while this group is trying to survive vampires, Hugh, and even a random wendigo, they were still such fun to read about. For the most part, this installment just felt like a bunch of strategical maneuvering to get everything in its proper place and while I understand the ultimate importance of it, it felt far more long and drawn out than should have been necessary. We get more info into Kate’s lineage that only makes you wonder just what she is capable of with the proper teachings. I don’t think I’ll be staying away from Kate Daniels anymore because it was damn good to be back.

The seventh book in the Kate Daniels series, and a pivotal installment in the series, where Kate finally meet her father. Not a good place to start for new readers, although in a way I thought it served as a new beginning, having lost my way a bit with the previous novel in the series, [Magic rises].Nice story, although a little moody and dark - I kind of miss the banter and levity (for a given value of..) from the early books.

I love it when series that I've enjoyed for years suddenly kick the story up a notch -- that's what's going on here, and it's wonderfully successful. Hooray for the plot continuing, the intensity changing and the unexpected twists of fate. Can't wait for the next one!

Magic Breaks is the seventh book in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. This book is a turning point for the series as the one event the previous six books has been building up to finally happens: Roland arrives. Yes, there is a mystery to solve, heart pounding action and some Pack/People politics to deal with. All of it is overshadowed by the knowledge the Roland is coming and Kate will do everything in her power to keep those she loves alive. While the mystery and political side of things was interesting, it's Kate's internal struggle where the heart of this story is. The wait was worth it. Finally seeing Kate embrace her heritage and truly know what it means to be Roland's daughter was glorious. I also enjoyed getting to know Ghastek better as well as some different Pack members though I missed some of my favorite characters who weren't involved in events. That ending was quite a surprise. With only three books to go I can't wait to see what the implications mean for the Pack and Atlanta. And I need more Roland please. Is it bad that I like the guy? Overall this was a satisfying read.

So I'd actually like to give this a 4.5. The story itself is fine and it is a suitable "end" to the original Roland Arc. It was a real "page turner"--technically I was listening on CD--and it wasn't clear until the end how it all was going to turn out. And mostly it didn't fell unreasonable. Highly recommended but...

...and here's the spoilers. The story starts with a long introduction that felt unnecessary, as it seemed to be designed to help people who'd never read another book in the series. Perhaps a noble gesture, but this is the 7th and last book in the series, a pointer to the earlier books might have been better. Then it has a long prologue narrated by Barabbas that also serves as a catch-up. Then the real story starts and has plenty of obvert catch-ups as well. Definitely didn't need all 3. Also in one of the prologues, the author says definitively that this while "wrapping up" the arc in one sense, that the main characters would return in later novels. Certainly didn't ruin the story, but seemed very unnecessary. (Put after the story?)

Finally the shoe drops in this book that was waiting to fall ever since the end of the previous book. I won't give it away but anyone who has read the series knows exactly what Kate fears the most and it has come to pass. Most of the story has Curran out of town and Kate trying to solve a murder under a short time span to prevent a war between the People and the Pack. Even knowing it is a setup from Hugh to discredit the Pack, Kate scrambles to try and find a solution that will work for the Pack and still comply with the terms of the deal. The second half is her dealing with the one thing she has tried to avoid her entire life. The book was really good and I did like the forward that let the reader know that yes, the main story arc is at an end but this isn’t the end of the books. Not a book for a new reader but a complete payoff for fans of the series

When Curran leaves Kate in charge of the pack, it leaves her wide open for trouble. A shapeshifter has killed one of the People, and they are out for more than just blood. It's time for Kate to face her greatest fear. Roland is determined to test her limits, and Kate is severely outnumbered. War is brewing on the horizon. Kate is given twenty four hours to hunt down the shapeshifter and give them over to the People, or else Atlanta will be reduced to a blood smear.

I will admit it took me a while to write this review. I struggled with what to say for the first time in a while. The Kate Daniel's series has been a wild ride from book one. Kate was built into a tough as nails character with a personality as sharp as her sword. But with this book, for the first time, I felt derailed.

As we journey through the People's territory to find clues to the murder, Kate wasn't able to be the flashy merc we've grown to love. I was excited to see a new side to her as she worked in stealth with members of the pack. Unfortunately, her pining for Curran throughout the process angered me. Since when does she doubt herself because of him? If this had been the only section of the book that happened, I could have let it pass.

When Kate is faced with one of the many desperate situations she has been in, she becomes so obsessed with Curran that he is her only hope. Instead of fighting for her life, she barely tries to escape and sits and waits. She waits! When has Kate ever waited for someone to rescue her? When has she ever been a damsel in distress? I could have believed this route if she had tried harder to begin with.

I would rather rate this book a 3.5, but we aren't allowed half star ratings. I gave it the benefit of a doubt and went with 4 instead of 3 stars. I want to believe this lapse in writing will not continue into the next novel. But unfortunately, I will be taking a break from the Kate Daniels series for at least a book or two.

Lately, I've found that Kate is relying more and more on Curran to save her and we are losing the kick ass heroine we met at the beginning of the series.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Magic Breaks, we finally get to meet Roland and answer a few questions. But Kate's life seems to revolve around Curran, she's waiting for him to turn up when he's not around, until then her life is on hold. That doesn't sit well with me. But go, read and judge for yourself.

Kate Daniels is one of my all time favourite characters Ilona Andrews one of my favourite authors, ant this series is well worth reading If you like humour, romance, and awesome world building.

I'm drawing a blank on how to review this one. A lot happened in this book; it was a little bit exhausting just reading it. I'm thankful I managed to wait out starting it until yesterday, because I blew off my entire Friday afternoon and evening finishing it; I was not going to be interrupted (I've never been so happy MT had plans to go to the pub!). it was good, great even; all of it. I especially liked how Kate's family reunion turned out - it didn't feel obvious even though there was no other possible outcome. I can't imagine anyone who reads this series hasn't already devoured this one, but if there is, I recommend Magic Breaks highly. Imagine at least three more paragraphs below of enthusiastic gushing, but I'm also happy to take a break from this series until the paperback of #8 comes out; by then, I'll be ready for more Curran and Kate.

Love how the protagonist has matured over the series. Here, some more personal revelations are presented and Kate makes some surprising choices. Just love that in some of her weakest moments, her slowly given trust pays off. Also, the inevitable meeting with the Big Guy...is awesome! ;)

I LOVED how it ended and can't wait to see the next adventures. I want MORE!LOVED: I have to add the following quotes to my quote jar (most courtesy of Desandra, Ascanio, Derek--they should have a road show) “Quick, Derek, it's your chance to shine," Ascanio said. Derek gave him a withering look. "Desandra is a mother, Robert is married, Kate's affianced, and I'm an old soul. You're the closest thing to a virgin we've got. Get on with growing some flowing locks.” Desandra shrugged her shoulders. "Hey, Kate? Have you thought of walking up to Hugh and telling him that he's got the biggest dick ever?" She spread her arms to the size of a baseball bat. "No, you think it would work?" I asked. "It's worth a try. Derek growled. "Looking for something to take notes with.” “Sit your ass down, Don Juanabe," Derek said. "Don Juanabe?" Ascanio pulled out his swords. "Don Juan Wannabe," Derek explained. "See I shortened it. If you still don't get it, I'll write it down for you after the fight." "You've maxed out your wit quota for the night," Ascanio said. "I'm just getting started." "Be careful, you might sprain something in your brain.” “Where are we going?” Desandra asked. “We’re going to Blue Ribbon Stables,” I said. “It’s the closest place to rent a horse. “Why?” Desandra asked. “Because I can’t keep up with you on foot,” I said. “And she runs like a rhino.” Derek added. “You can hear her a mile away.” Traitor. “I thought you had my back?” “I do,” Derek said. “The rhino running is nice. Makes it easy to keep track of you. If I ever lose you, I just have to listen and there you are.” “Yes,” Desandra agreed. “It’s convenient.” I laughed. “Are you always this casual?” Robert asked. “Derek and I worked together for a long time,” I told him. “He’s allowed some leeway.” “What about Desandra?” “She only bothers with protocol when she wants something. The rest of the time it’s lewd jokes and descriptions of plums.” Desandra snickered. Robert’s eyebrows crept up. “Plums?” I waved my hand. “Don’t ask.” Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Renée Raudman / Length: 16 hrs and 23 mins Just Listen! Felt a little anti-climactic -- more of an intermezzo than a finale. My main beef is that Kate didn't really get to show off her awesome fighting skills, or her heroism. Just a sort of big explosion of unexplained magical power at the end, so that wasn't all that exciting to me. The resolution of the central conflict of this arc (the "I must kill my father, the arch-evil of the last several millennia") was also somewhat underwhelming. Or unsurprising, I guess. I wasn't disappointed, exactly -- there wasn't much else they could do with this sort of Child of the Evil Master of the Universe plot they'd set out. Either Roland could be defeated in some kind of cheesy way, or he could be misrepresented, or he could be playing a long game. The authors chose the latter option, mostly, and it's probably a good one. I liked the renunciation of power theme -- that's less common than it should be in the urban fantasy genre. And I sincerely hope Curran becomes a good house husband. All in all, I'm happy to have read it, and although I wasn't excited by it, I'm not greatly displeased, either.
