About this series
Jungle Tales of Tarzan explores the life of the young Tarzan, his adventurous boyhood and teen years among the great apes and other wild creatures that were his only family. The young Tarzan was unlike his companions and playmates-theirs was a simple, savage life, filled with little but killing or being killed. But Tarzan had all of a normal boy's desire to learn. He had taught himself to read from books left by his dead father. Now he sought to apply this book knowledge to the world around him. He sought for such things as the source of dreams and the whereabouts of God. And he searched for the love and affection that every human being needs.
The stories that can be found in Jungles Tales of Tarzan are "Tarzan's First Love," "The Capture of Tarzan," "The Fight for the Balu," "The God of Tarzan," "Tarzan and the Black Boy," "The Witch-Doctor Seeks Vengeance," "The End of Bukawai," "The Lion," "The Nightmare," "The Battle for Teeka," "A Jungle Joke," and "Tarzan Rescues the Moon."

- Tarzan of the Apes
1
When a ship's mutiny forces a young noble English couple out onto the remote African coast, their child is born into the wild. Their deaths a short time later leave the boy alone in the jungle wilderness-until a she-ape adopts him and raises him as her own. Reluctantly accepted into the tribe by its fierce leader, Kerchak, the baby Tarzan must prove himself by learning the ways of survival in the jungle: how to talk with animals, swing through the trees, and fight the great predators. In time, his strength, courage, and human intelligence earn him a place as Lord of the Jungle. But when civilized men enter the jungle, Tarzan is forced to choose between two worlds. Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic tale is both a reflection on civilization from an outside point of view and an exploration of the primal force within us all.
- Tarzan of the Apes
1
Born of noble stock to parents who become marooned on the savage West African coast, the young Lord Greystoke is orphaned in his first year of life. Named Tarzan by the great apes that raise him, he must learn the law of the jungle to survive. As he matures, his strength and agility develop to match those of the beasts that he is surrounded by, yet he realizes that he is different. He combines higher intelligence, superhuman strength, and his jungle training to become the unconquerable Lord of the Jungle. When a group of civilized people invade Tarzan's jungle paradise, his life is changed forever, for with them is Jane. Jane is the first woman Tarzan has ever seen, and he must have her as his own. But how can this uncivilized ape-man hope to win her?
- The Return of Tarzan
2
Tarzan had renounced his right to the woman he loved, and civilization held no pleasure for him. After a brief and harrowing period among men, he turned back to the African jungle where he had grown to manhood. It was there he first heart of Opar, the city of gold, left over from fabled Atlantis. It was a city of hideous men-and of beautiful, savage women, over whom reigned La, high priestess of the Flaming God. Its altars were stained with the blood of many sacrifices. Unheeding of the dangers, Tarzan led a band of savage warriors toward the ancient crypts and the more ancient evil of Opar.
- The Son of Tarzan
4
In this sequel to The Beasts of Tarzan, the Lord of the Apes' old nemesis, Alexis Paulvitch, lures Tarzan's son, Jack, to Africa, where he plans to kill him. His plan is foiled when Jack escapes with the help of Akut, the great ape. The pair flee to the jungle where Tarzan was raised a generation earlier, and Jack establishes his own reputation among the apes as Korak the Killer. He also rescues Meriem, a beautiful young woman, from a band of Arab raiders. She turns out to be the daughter of Armand Jacot, the Prince de Cadrenet, and is therefore a fitting mate for the son of Lord Greystoke.
- The Beasts of Tarzan
3
After renouncing his savage life in the jungle for the sake of his wife, Jane, and newborn son, Tarzan finds his trust in civilization has again been betrayed. Tarzan, now the rich Lord Greystoke, becomes the target of sinister criminals. When he and Jane try to save their abducted son, Jane is kidnapped and Tarzan is stranded on a deserted island. But as the lord of his realm, he calls the beasts of the jungle to his service. Sheeta the panther, Akut the great ape, and the giant Mugambi remain steadfast allies in Tarzan's quest to save his family...if they are still alive!
- Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar
5
Edgar Rice Burroughs is the creator of one of the most iconic figures in American pop culture: Tarzan of the Apes. Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar is the fifth book in the Tarzan series and considered by many to be one of the best. In one of his earlier adventures, Tarzan visited the mysterious, ruinous city of Opar that dated back to Atlantean times and was now inhabited by a strange horde of bloodthirsty, apelike priests headed by La, the High Priestess of the Flaming God. Thence, he brought back very little of the great store of ingoted gold hidden deep in a hill, and was rich for life. In the current adventure, Tarzan returns to the gold-mining city of Opar to contend with greedy villains and the amorous attentions of the High Priestess. But the priests who work for her have other ideas-they don't intend to let Tarzan escape their sacrificial knives a second time.

Edgar Rice Burroughs
Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan’s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs’s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.
