About this audiobook
José Hernández
José Hernández (1834-1886) was an Argentine poet, journalist, and politician. Born on a farm in Buenos Aires Province, he was raised in a family of cattle ranchers. Educated from a young age, he became a newspaperman during the violent civil wars between Uruguay and Argentina through his support of the Federalist Party. He founded El Río de la Plata, a prominent newspaper advocating for local autonomy, agrarian policies, and republicanism. Towards the end of his life, he completed his extensive epic poem Martín Fierro, now considered a national treasure of Argentine arts and culture.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Excelente lectura, pero advierto a los lectores que los capítulos están desordenados.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Epic Poem. This is the story of the Gaucho in Argentina. The man is poor and has been mistreated by those around him. He loses his home, wife, children when he is conscripted. In the conscription, he is not paid, fed, or clothed. Only abused and used. There are two sections. The first is 13 cantos and the second part is 33 cantos. It is not hard to read but it is long and I am not much for poetry though I would rather read one like this that is actually a story than just straight poetry.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I wanted to read this book ever since I read the Borges short story based on an episode from it. Years ago Ibought a battered Spanish copy, and I also read a translation from a library. I was a bit disappointed in it, but still I thought it important enough to Argentine culture to buy this copy when it was available cheap.
