About this audiobook

With the pressure on after his success in Gaol, Eli Monpress, professional thief and degenerate, decides it's time to lie low for a bit. Taking up residence in a tiny seaside village, Eli and his companions seize the chance for some fun and relaxation.

Nico, however, is finding it a bit hard. Plagued by a demon's voice in her head and feeling powerless, she only sees herself as a burden. Everyone's holiday comes to an untimely close, though, when Pele arrives to beg Eli's help for finding her missing father.

But there are larger plans afoot than even Eli can see, and the real danger, and the solution, may lie with one of his own and her forgotten past.

If only Nico could remember whose side she's on.

Rachel Aaron

Rachel Aaron was born in Atlanta, GA. After a lovely, geeky childhood full of books and public television, and then an adolescence spent feeling awkward about it, she went to the University of Georgia to pursue English Literature with an eye towards getting her PhD. Upper division coursework cured her of this delusion, and she graduated in 2004 with a BA and a job, which was enough to make her mother happy. She currently lives in a 70s house-of-the-future in Athens, GA with her loving husband, overgrown library, and small, brown dog. Find out more about the author at www.rachelaaron.net.

The Spirit Eater is the third in The Legend of Eli Monpress series by Rachel Aaron. The story is a lot less lighthearted as things take a serious turn. With Eli's notoriety at an all time high, Eli decides it's time for the team to lay low for a while and relax by heading Home. Unfortunately for Nico the voice of the demon in her head is growing stronger by the day and she feels powerless, both to stop it and like she's letting the team down due to her weakness. Their holiday comes to an abrupt end when Pele arrives in a panic - her mother has been killed and her father gone missing. Of course Eli must help out, even if he's not entirely sure what he's getting his team into. This is definitely Nico's book. I enjoyed learning more about her character and the greater struggle between demons and spirits. It adds nicely to the world building. The story feels like a set up a bigger battle ahead where the fate of the world may be at stake.I'm not sure if it was my mood, the pacing or what but I found the first half of the book easy to set aside. Come to think of it, it might have been that I had the wrong expectation for what I thought this series was going to be about. Eli does no thieving, there is no fun caper. While there is some humor, the overall tone is much more serious now that we the reader begin to understand the world better.I am curious enough to see where all this is going so I'm looking forward to the next book. I also hope we get Josef's background soon!

A major part of this book follows the story of Eli's companion, Nico, who is almost consumed by a demon and still fighting to retain her identity.
A lot of big players in this world make their presence known a bit more and Eli struggles to keep his hold on events, while a some more about him is revealed in the course of this adventure.
    An enjoyable series.

The third novel in a great fantasy series chronicling the adventures of Eli Monpress, his companions Josef and Nico, and those determined to catch the thief. This volume reveals more about Nico, the young girl and demonseed who is fiercely attached to the swordsman Josef. As more is discovered about Nico's past - and what exactly the demon inside her is - this knowledge has the power to help Eli on his latest quest and also to destroy everything he has worked towards. Rachel Aaron's Eli Monpress novels are very enjoyable and I hope there continue to be more of them!

This series just gets better and better. Eli, Josef and Nico take a break from adventuring to rest up but find that actually there's adventure around the corner looking for them. Pele comes to beg Eli to help her find her father, who is hunting her mother's killer.Miranda is still looking to get revenge on Eli and she gains some help. It's a romp, the characters chew scenery with great effect, Eli quips his way through almost every event and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

In this installment of The Legend of Eli Monpress, we get to see much more of Nico and Josef, and learn more about demons and the metaphysics of this world. There's honestly not a whole lot of Eli going on, and even less Miranda - and that's a good thing, really, because Nico starts to really shine, and we get some tantalizing glimpses of things to come with Josef. The metaphysics and world-building are really the point of this novel - we learn more about the Shepherdess/Benehime, the creation and ruling of the world and the various Powers, the trapping of the Master under the Dead Mountain, and the power of the League of Storms. It makes for a good bit of exposition, but it's all exposition done in the course of another rollicking adventure. The plot is less well-constructed than in earlier novels, and there are several phrases that occurred over and over and really set my teeth on edge ("...and then something extraordinary happened." Uh, how about just telling us what that thing was? The marker is unnecessary). But overall, it was still a romp, and still a great twist on the usual fantasy tropes.Highly recommended, and I really can't wait for the omnibus edition and The Spirit War in the fall...time for Josef to take center stage!

Oh, what happened to the good old days when I watched Eli Monpress charm doors off their hinges? Gone, but in place of it is one hell of a plot waiting to be thickened! The Spirit Eater takes us deeper into the rabbit hole of this delightful world of magic where no one is who they seem to be and everything seems to be bent on colliding! I'm half-afraid to see where Rachel Aaron will take us in the 4th installment - but I am certain that it will rock this world!
