About this audiobook

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents a seductively suspenseful tale of one woman’s shattered innocence, the terrifying search for truth and a heart’s journey toward healing…

Olivia’s parents were among Hollywood’s golden couples—until the night a monster came and took her mother away forever. A monster with the face of her father...

Sheltered from the truth, an older Olivia only dimly recalls her night of terror—but her recurring nightmares make her realize she must piece together the real story. Now, assisted by Noah Brady, the son of the police detective who found her cowering in her closet so many years before, she may have her chance. Noah wants to reconstruct the night that has become an infamous part of Hollywood history. He also wants to help Olivia and heal the longing in her lonely heart. But once the door to her past is opened, there’s no telling what’s waiting on the other side. For somewhere, not too far away, the monster walks again...

I really enjoyed these characters. I knew who the killer was early on and thought I would lose interest but the story and characters are so real that I got sucked in. I found myself crying at the end. Loved it!

Too predictable. Nora Roberts gave it all away very early in the story. Still a decent read.

The narrator was no good. The voices were poorly done and were very distracting from the story. Story was okay. Not one of my favorite books.

The book was excellent but I only give it three stars because the recording had a skip in it after chapter 32 and it skipped right to the end so I missed the last part of the book which was very disappointing!

Enjoyed this story a lot. Nora Roberts is quite a favourite of mine. I first listened to the 'in death" series which I absolutely loved! This story was fast paced with a good plot and likeable interesting Characters!

Hard to believe this was published in 1999. The dialogue is so weirdly old fashioned and stilted. We stopped using the word “hunk” to describe a hot guy in the ‘80’s. That is just one example of many. Still, that would be easy enough to ignore, but I found the characters surprisingly difficult to relate to. They were so very shallow and surface only. The two fathers (his and hers) were the best developed and most interesting characters. The two leads were a cross between boring and annoying. The hero was an insensitive selfish jerk. He was big on saying he loved her, but when he didn’t get his way would say things with the intention to cause her pain. A recipe for an ongoing miserable relationship and divorce. It’s weird to read about someone that the author tries to “tell us” is a great guy but then “shows us” that he is cruel and petty and cares more about his own hurt ego than her feelings. It’s a kind of literary gaslighting this author leans into with a number of her male characters. The narrator didn’t make the weird dialogue any better with her strange inflections that sounded painfully unnatural and overwrought. You could HEAR the way she used her head voice to create Liv’s character and she spoke in a way that made her sound like a 1940’s screen actress. It made it Super bizarre and hard to get into “believing” in Liv’s character. Noah’s voice was a combination of Clark Gable and Indiana Jones in his speech patterns. Weird. Cocky and abusive, with a tinge of over the top stage elocution. It was impossible to imagine either of them as physically or emotionally attractive.

STILL, the mystery was ok. I wasn’t completely set on whodunit. I normally LOVE romance novels but, IMO, the romance here detracted from the story. The mystery is the strongest part of it, but the romance was shallow and forced. I stuck with this until the end for the mystery, when my normal go-to is to stick with a mystery for the romance. Toxic, doomed relationships packaged as a HEA do annoy me, though.

This romantic thriller features Olivia MacBride, who, at the age of four, witnesses her father brutally murder her mother. After being whisked away to Washington by her maternal grandparents, Livvy learns to bury the horror of that night deep inside. She finds solace in the forest wilderness surrounding the River's End Lodge and separates herself from the rest of the world. Then Noah, the son of the detective that found her that night reenters her life, bringing the past with him. Suspenseful and emotional, this story also has a shocking twist at the end that you won't see coming.

The first half of the book introduces us to the two main characters. Olivia survives the horror of her starlet mother's death and retreats to the Olympic rainforest in Washington State. Noah's father is the detective that puts Olivia's father in prison for the murder of Olivia's mother. Noah and Olivia come together when crime writer, Noah, decides to write a true crime book about the death of Olivia's mother. Olivia's story is heart wrenching to the point that we feel not only her fear but also her sorrow. The last half of the story focuses on the romance of Olivia and Noah who is trying to tell the true story surrounding the death of Olivia's mother. Suspense follows when someone begins to terrorize both Noah and Olivia. This is a wonderful story that has it all: suspense, mystery, and romance.

River's End by Nora RobertsA good, enjoyable suspense, drama novel. Didn't care for the explicit sex scenes, I've read 2 of her books this week and they were both explicit.

This novel is fantastic. I felt the suspense throughout the novel without it feeling like it overwhelmed the entire story. I wish that there had been more insight into the mind of the villain and a more sophisticated motive or at least the lead up. That being said, the plot and story as a whole is fantastic and well-written.

Often I find that even novels clearly labeled as “romantic suspense” tend to be heavy on suspense and light on romance. While I am not a fan of romances…with ‘River’s End” Nora Roberts achieves a perfect balance that should appeal to fans of both genre. The reader can watch Noah and Olivia as they fall in love…yet experience the nightmare of the past that is always lurking in the background. The only real flaw…at least for me… was in the ending. Matters were resolved just a little too quickly. It would have been nice to have had a little more insight into the villain…but I think readers will enjoy the surprise

I got this book as a gift from my grandmother and I laughed at the though of me reading a "Romance" novel. Once I read the synopsis I thought it had potential and ended up finishing it in 2 days! I was hooked so I read The Reef after and lent River's End to a friend who never returned it. I Checked it out from the library to read it again a few years ago and decided to buy it from Amazon just to own it again just in case I felt like re-reading it...lol. It's definitely a must have!

This book was 3.5 stars for me. In deciding whether to list it here as 3 or 4 stars, I decided to round down, since my standards for Nora Roberts are pretty high.I actually liked the first half quite a bit. The book took its time setting up the primary romance, starting when Olivia was only 4 years old, and revisiting her at her first meeting with Noah when she was 12 (no romance) yet. Their next meeting (when she was 19) was full of sparks, which lead to some burns, and a refusal of all contact for more years. This also gave time to develop some secondary characters, particularly the family members. Noah's parents were great characters. I did like Olivia's aunt and grandparents, but they weren't as intriguing to read about. All of this building of the characters and the overall story was great. I liked both leads, I found the characters interesting, I had a guess as to where the whole story was going.Unfortunately, once the story kicked into full gear, I had a couple of problems with it that really got in my way.The first is a common aspect of romance novels that doesn't appeal to me. Olivia is unwilling to get involved with Noah, but he knows better. She tells him to back off, but he proceeds to kiss her, and of course she discovers that's what she really wanted all along. And then she backs off and thinks about it, and the whole thing starts over again. The second is the guess I had about the surprise direction the book would take. I guessed early on where it was going, but didn't really see anything to support it through the book until the end. Either the reader is supposed to know what's going to happen, and there should be more support for it through the book, or it is supposed to be a surprise, and I shouldn't have guessed so early.I still enjoyed the book, and if I'd gone in with lower expectations, I probably wouldn't have let either of these things bug me as much.

I really enjoyed River’s End. The character, Olivia was a bit of a pain in the butt, while I understand the reasons she behaved the way she did, she came off as cold and uncaring and because of that, I didn’t like her character. I think the best character in the book was, Frank. I wish he was in the book more. Nora Roberts did a great job with the descriptions of the forests of the Northwest. This is a excellent who-dun-it novel because up until the last pages you have no idea. This novel has everything. A good plot, suspense, drama, love, trauma and romance - a great novel and a must read!

I was disappointed in this book. It's a weird mix of Nora Roberts and JD Robb. (I know they're the same author, but they're definitely different styles.)I found the precipitating 'incident' disturbing although I understand how it was needed to frame the rest of the story. Then I found the rest of the book an odd blend of 'mystery' and romance with the romance almost an afterthought. On the upside, I had read this book before and KNEW the twist at the end. Yet, I still ended up reading the entire thing and not knowing exactly how it would wrap up. I would credit Roberts storytelling ability for that. Even though this was not my favorite by her (and not my favorite, in general) I still gave it 3 stars because it was an interesting and mainly entertaining read.

Bland, forgettable, and pointless. Nora Roberts has much better stories out there, so I recommend steering clear of this one.
