About this audiobook

From a stately country house in Hampshire to the dazzling drawing rooms of London Society comes an exquisite tale of an elfin beauty, a vengeful lord, and a sweet love that is sheer poetry.

With her reputation forever tarnished by a youthful indiscretion, lovely Emily Faringdon is resigned to a life of spinsterhood, until she embarks on an unusual correspondence and finds herself falling head over heals in love. Sensitive, intelligent, and high-minded, her noble pen-pal seems to embody everything Emily has ever dreamed of in a man. But the mysterious Earl of Blade is not at all what he seems.

Driven by dark, smoldering passions and a tragic secret buried deep within his soul, Blade has all of London cowering at his feet, but not Emily... never Emily. For even as she surrenders to his seductive charms, she knows the real reason for his amorous wit. And she knows that she must reach the heart of his golden-eyed dragon before the avenging demons of their entwined pasts destroy the only love she has ever known...

This audio book, like other Amanda Quick books, “skips” parts of the book. It will be on page 97 and immediately skip to page 105 (example), which leave out content and context. It is disappointing.

Simon was an arrogant ass. He constantly mocked, humiliated and derided her because apparently he was furious that he was attracted to her and needed her. That she put up with that treatment was pathetic. I kept reading hoping he would soon redeem himself.
He did —- in the last two minutes!!!??? Too little, too late. I have read almost all of AQ’s novels and Simon is BY FAR the least likeable “hero”. I am planning to re-read “Wicked Widow” and “The Paid Companion”, two of her best novels . . . and marvelous heros!

    Synopsis:
Resigned to a life of spinsterhood following a youthful indiscretion, Emily Faringdon never dreamed she would meet anyone who could see beyond her past. Simon Traherne, Earl of Blade, will let nothing stand in the way of his vengeance against the Faringdon family until he meets Emily and realizes that some things are more important the revenge.

    Review:
Quick's books never fail to put a smile on my face. The writing is immersing and the dialogue exceedingly witty.

Emily and Simon are a wonderful couple. While some readers may find Emily’s naiveté ridiculous and annoying, to me she is a charming and gutsy character whose fondness for romantic escapism actually masks her awareness of the harsher side of life. The outlandish situations she gets herself into are refreshingly endearing and highly amusing. Simon is also a likeable character despite the fact that he initially comes across as cold and bitter. It is great to watch him struggle with his emotions until all his coldness and reserve melt away.

Like many of the readers here on Goodreads, I could have done without the excessive repetition of Emily’s "metaphysical, transcendental" nonsense. Once or twice was quite enough to get the point across. Nevertheless, this did not detract from my overall enjoyment of this highly entertaining story.

On a side note, if you have never read Quick’s books before, I would not start with this one. I can, however, recommend her first historical romance, Seduction, as a starting point.

Some books can be read anywhere, others suit a certain mood. After a heavy day gardening, I was in the mood for a nice fluffy relaxing book to read in the bath. Decided Stephen King probably didn't fit the bill, while Amanda Quick most certainly does. So, another one of those books where you know nothing really nasty is ever going to befall our hero & heroine and prevent them from being together - although there are the necessary alarms and hurdles in the path of true love.Simon, earl of Blade, lost his house, his security & his father after a game of cards with Broderick Farringdon. He was 12. But now he's back, having gained a fortune in the east, and a taste for dragons & exotic tea. Emily Farringdon is a romantic idealist who happens to be a financial wizzard. She's the one making the money that has kept the house and her family together while her father & brothers gamble their lives away. Simon intends to take his revenge on the family that ruined him through Emily. Things don't necessarily run to plan, though and he finds himself falling for the red haired elfin creature. So the plan for vengeance is modified and slowly Emily works something other than coldness and revenge into Simon. Utterly predictable, but a load of fun and just right for relaxing both brain and body.

Emily Faringdon is resigned to a life of spinsterhood. A moment of indiscretion in her youth has left her haunted by scandal and she has no real hope of marriage, not respectable marriage anyway. She engages in some correspondence and finds herself attracted to the man she's corresponding with, what she doesn't realise is that she's a dupe, being used to get at her father.Yes it's a romance and the hero and heroine have to jump through hoops to get to the romance and it's all finished up neatly, but the journey was fun.

Writing a Amanda Quick, Jayne Ann Krentz created a delightful collection of paperback regencies, the first of which was "Sandal. Here we see Krentz at her finest. Her women are strong and feminine, her men are somewhat arrogant but are surprised to find that they don't dominate the women who they come to love. Krentz is all about commitment, family and romance.

one of my favorite historicals from quick; perfect combination of chemistry, comedic twist; revenge and family loyalty; the heroine is witty and the hero is dark; PERFECT!
