An angel/housekeeper arrives at widower Seth's house in the form of Mrs Merkle, duly changed by his twin 6yo boys to Mrs Miracle. And miracles is what she does best, helping to heal his in-laws misunderstandings and almost divorce, introducing him to the woman who will become his wife, healing Reba's rift with her family, and finally departing on Christmas with all things tidied up!

I really enjoyed this Christmas romance. I bought this at Wal-Mart and I voluntarily chose to review this story. I've given this a 5* rating. There was funny and sad parts with this. Both the hero and the heroine are grieving about something in their past life. Add twin boys and a special housekeeper and things start getting more interesting. I laughed and got a little teary eyed with this special Christmas story. This is just one of many great books by this author.

The sum of its parts equals a touching story about how much we need one another to survive the trials and tribulations of this life, but also celebrate the moments that we should never take for granted. It shows us how a single woman wronged in the past needs to let go of that hurt despite it coming from family. It brings us a widowed single father bringing up two boys the best he can but unable to crawl out from beneath his grief. It shares the memories of a long term marriage falling to pieces when they no longer seem to see eye to eye. It shines a light on a busybody with a loose tongue that finds judging others through a place of faith (at least in her mind's eye) thoroughly satisfying without her ever taking a step to assist in sorting matters she knew nothing of. I know, it sounds harrowing, nay depressing even, but trust me...that's merely laying the groundwork for Mrs. Miracle's...I mean, Mrs. Merkle's appearance.

So many hurting souls--Sharon & Jerry are trying to adjust to life after Jerry's retirement and the return of their twin grandsons to their father's care. Seth still grieves his wife Pamela 4 years later and now has his twin sons to manage on top of his busy work schedule--and he can't seem to keep a housekeeper. Reba has distanced herself from her family due to her sister's actions and her feeling that the family sticks up for Vicki more than they stick up for her. Harriet is a long-suffering church-goer who's lonely and gossips under the guise of prayer requests and concern.Into all this comes Emily Merkle--whom the twins dub "Mrs. Miracle". She reminds me a bit of Mary Poppins (though Seth thinks of her more as Mother Goose). She takes over the twins's schedule and encourages the introduction of Seth and Reba to each other. Though Seth and Reba start out understanding each other's hurt, they eventually challenge each other to get past them so that they can go on living full lives with each other.Mrs. Merkle also takes it upon herself to visit Harriet in the hospital and to try to be friendly toward her--between the minister's advice and Mrs. Merkle's, I hope Harriet changes going forward. I liked Mrs. Miracle's "sayings" that were quoted at the beginning of each chapter. Though there is some prayer by Emily later in the book, some might not recognize it as such. Other than the church attendance, there isn't much to say it's a Christian fiction book within its pages.

Seth Webster has been struggling since his wife died. His six year old twin boys are out of control, his house is in chaos, and while he's hired housekeepers none of them last long. When Mrs. Merkle shows up at his house she seems to be a miracle - in fact his kids call her Mrs. Miracle. Mrs. Miracle soon gets Seth's house in order, but she has more tricks up her sleeve - she helps orchestrate a romance between Seth and travel agent Reba Maxwell. Reba has some baggage of her own - she has never forgiven her sister for something that happened years ago. As Mrs. Miracle works her magic on Seth and Reba, she is also trying to help Seth's in-laws, Sharon and Jerry, whose long-standing marriage has hit a very rocky patch. And as if that wasn't enough, there is the matter of sharp-tongued Harriett Foster who needs a gentle nudge to set her on the right path. To pull all of this off at Christmas time will truly take a miracle."Mrs. Miracle" is a very cute romance novel by Debbie Macomber that is sure to warm readers' hearts. A Christmas setting in this type of book is always a nice one and Macomber makes good use of it. The novel is a nice mixture of romance and humor with a little magic thrown in. Even without the magic elements the story is a good one. Readers will sympathize with Seth who is still dealing with the loss of his wife and truly has no control over his children. The children, Judd and Jason, while rambunctious, are never bratty. Reba's character is well developed - she is so wrapped up in bitterness over her sister's betrayal that she fails to see how her behavior is not only hurting her family, but herself. The romance between Seth and Reba is very sweet, just a bit spicy by Macomber's standards (no sex though). While the plot line with Harriett Foster could have been developed more, the bittersweet plot line with Sharon and Jerry is extremely well done and you'll pull for the two of them to work things out after almost forty years of marriage. The magical elements are very cute and it is best if readers don't think too much about where Mrs. Miracle came from."Mrs. Miracle" is a very cute holiday romance.

** spoiler alert ** Seth Webster has gone through more nannies in the past year then many go through in a lifetime. His two energetic twin boys deem a handful for just about anyone, and as the holidays approach Seth needs nothing short of a miracle. Mrs. Merkle comes into their life, and she's nothing short of just that "A Miracle". The kids love her and good luck starts coming Seths way, including a travel agent named Reba, who's gone through a tragedy as tragic as Seths and they find comfort in each other's company during this holiday season.Usually if I know a movie is based off a book, I ALWAYS read the book first, but Mrs. Miracle was on the Hallmark channel one day during the holidays, and it looked really cute and I was in the mood for a holiday movie, so i watched it, and realized that I had this book on my shelves already!! I loved the movie, i found its simplicity to be enjoyable and it was a really heartwarming and "feel good" holiday movie. I figured I would read the book right after and in the beginning I thought it was going to be exactally the same as the movie, but it started to stray into different relationship dynamics that weren't even touched on in the movie, that i didn't like, for example Seth's twins living with his inlaws for four years after his wifes accident, and also their marital problems. I felt like it took away from the simple storyline that i loved in the movie!! This book is a cute, holiday read, and I did enjoy it, just not as much as the movie unfortantually.

A little too cheesy for me though cute enough I suppose. A romance with a little Mary Poppins thrown in.

The help of a good housekeeper was all Seth Webster thought he needed and after his twin six-year-old boys (Jason & Judd) had run off all of them that the agency had sent over, Seth was on his last thread. The arrival of Mrs. Merkle (Mrs. Miracle) was just that, a miracle. In a matter of a few days she had not only gotten his house back in order, but the boys were behaving better than ever. With Christmas approaching the Church program was important to so many people, so when the director left, everyone scramble to find someone who could manage the kids, and organize the volunteers in time to pull it all off. Reba Maxwell was just that sort of person, plus she needed someplace to be on Christmas Eve so she didn’t have to face parts of her family that she had been avoiding for the past four years. Finally having an excuse to meet, Seth and Reba found they had a lot in common. Their painful past gave them each a reason to be cautious, but finding a kindred spirit helped - to a point.Mrs. Macomber does it again. She has a way of finding the right combination to make every character so real, believable, annoying and sympathetic all at the same time. The addition of the in-laws and their troubles made Seth that much more of a loveable yet ‘lost soul’ type of person. The whole deal with Reba and sister Vicki was at first aggravating to me, then I got it, finally. As far as Mrs. Miracle is concerned, she seemed to have a little bit more of a connection then most do but, is she just intuitive or is she an Angel sent to help this group find the Christmas Miracle they all needed, wanted and deserved?April 21, 2009

It is a bit of a cross between a traditional romance and Mary Poppins. Mrs Merkle is such a fun, no-nonsense character and her relationship with the people in the story is great fun. As with many other stories by Debbie Macomber, religion plays a central role in the story and this is quite a fun story of life and love and a suggestion of angelic assistance.
