      I have been wanting to read this book for over a year now. It has been sitting on my shelf for the last 4 months, and now that I am finally finished with it, I am not pleased. I really dislike books that just leave you hanging without having a sequel coming out. And Something Like Fate happens to be one of those books.
      The book is told in three parts, April-May; June-August; and September-October, so we get less than a year in Lani, Jason, Erin and Blake's lives. Lani is the main character. There was an accident ( at first it isn't clear what kind or even when it happened) that involved her and her best friend Erin. This accident apparently gave the girls a deeper connection and Lani sees Erin as her "soul sister". Lani's other friend Blake is gay and so far Lani is the only one that knows. We get thrown into their junior year in high-school and get a little background on why Lani isn't hanging out with the same crowd that Erin does. The we get Jason thrown into the mix, he is Erin's newest interest and she acts a lot less like an almost 18 year old and more like a 14 or 15 year old when talking to Lani about him.
      Long story short, Erin and Jason start dating, Lani starts to fall for Jason because he is literally her soul-mate, they like the same things, have actually known each other since they were little, and even come up with some of the same off the wall stuff that no-one else gets. Lani starts hanging out with Jason more and more and even though she trys her hardest she can't help but fall for him a little more each day; of course Erin is ok with all of this because she thinks that Lani is just Jason's friend. You can tell that Jason likes Lani too, and even Blake can see it; Blake called it from the very beginning. Lani and Jason confess their feelings for each other towards the end of the school year and when Erin goes off to camp for the summer things get a little more serious between Lani and Jason.
      Jason breaks up with Erin in a letter and of course beginnings dating Lani, although they must keep it a secret until Jason can tell Erin about them in person. When Erin arrives home, Lani can't stand not telling her, so she convinces Jason that they shouldn't see each other until he can tell Erin. All heck breaks loose after that, and really; I shouldn't have expected less from Erin than what she did.
      Of course everything gets resolved in the end and while the ending is VERY abrupt, I can see why Susane ended it there. I would have LOVED to know how Lani and Jason got through the rest of the school year, and if her and Erin really did work things out; but I guess I'll leave all that up to my imagination.

      I really enjoyed the story, sometimes you don't know what is best, but follow your heart and you can be forgiven.

      Excellent book. I gave this author a second chance after reading one of her other books that was a pretty miserable experience for me. With this one she more than redeemed herself. I am hoping that the other one was a fluke.

      The characters in this book were full bodied, not shallow. They were average. Human.

      Oh, thank goodness I've finished. I know I'm not the target audience, but I read a lot of YA books, and I teach junior high, so I think I'm still qualified to judge....Ugh. Just thinking about this book after I'm done makes me cringe. I know how teenagers and preteens talk. I'm perfectly fine reading books in which teenagers talk the way they talk in life. But I'd rather not read ones that are written as if a preteen wrote them. "I was like..." "and then she goes..." ...he went." Ugh, ugh, ugh. I was practically begging for an "I said..." in there, I tell you. The characters' conversations themselves were often more intelligent than the way the author wrote the text surrounding them, and that's saying a lot. It probably didn't help that I listened to this one on audio, either....

      As for the storyline, it was just okay. The main character's obsession with fate, destiny, and fortunetelling techniques was a bit silly, but understandable for a seventeen-year-old. Her obsession with trying to make her amazingly selfish ex-best friend forgive her in spite of all of the horrible things that best friend is doing to her and/or encouraging her other friends to do to her? Not so much. At least Lani eventually sort of gets a backbone. It's probably a good thing this one was already on the shelves of my classroom library before I read it, otherwise it'd never have gotten there. Thank goodness I bought it on clearance. My advice? Don't bother reading this one if you've been out of junior high for more than five years.

       I enjoyed reading,”Something Like Fate”. It was a very descriptive and true to life book. This is the type of book I like to read. The story was about trust, friends, and relationships. The author gives great examples that teach about trusting your friends and knowing if you can really believe in them. The story is about a girl named Lani who is best friends with Erin. They've always had a very close bond ever since they were in a car accident when they were younger. If it weren't for Erin Lani wouldn't be alive. Erin saved Lani’s life when she heroically pulled Lani out of the car. Throughout the book Erin develops a crush on a young boy named Jason. Jason is the type of guy who loves sports and is very“popular”. The conflict and the true test of friendship arises when Lani also begins to like Jason. Before Erin leaves for the summer Lani begins to develop feelings for Jason and he begins to see Lani differently too. Lani tries to forget her feelings for him but can't. Neither can he. Throughout the book the reader discovers whether Erin and Lani’s friendship can survive a test like this. Will Jason choose Lani over Erin, and if he does will Lani and Erin remain best friends? Will their bond of friendship survive this test of trust and potential betrayal. All of the characters are likeable which makes you want all of them to win but you need to read the book to find out how they solve their dilemma! I would recommend this to any girl who’s interested in friendship and trust and how to survive the conflicts of love. See how they handle best friend betrayal and who is destined for love. On a scale of one through ten I would rate this a ten.

      High school junior Lani has always been able to predict her life path through horoscopes, but when she finds herself irrevocably drawn to Jason, her best friend Erin’s new boyfriend, and realizes that he feels the same way, her life spins out of control and into the “Unknown.” Jason makes a clean break from Erin over the summer while Erin’s away at camp, but when she returns and their senior year begins, Erin goes out of her way to make Lani’s life miserable by getting the whole class to excommunicate her. The beginning of the book feels a bit like a made-for-TV teen flick, but the ensuing bullying and a subplot involving a gay classmate and his abusive father quickly work to ground the storyline. Lani, Erin, and Jason never get into any “real” trouble, but the tension Lani feels amongst her classmates will feel very real to readers. A simple yet descriptive writing style and shorter chapters combined with the relatable, intense plot will engage struggling readers. Recommended for grades 8-10.

      It’s almost their senior year and Lani and Erin cannot wait, once they’re seniors they can drive to and from school and they don’t have to eat the mysterious lunch food. But, they still have to wait the last month or so of their junior year and the summer. During the last month of their junior year, Erin starts to like Jason, soon that “like” turns to love and Erin and Jason are going out. But problems start to develop, Erin is going to camp for two months in Vermont and Jason starts to hang out with Lani. He starts asking himself if he really likes Erin. With these problems, their relationship is challenged. That is when Jason cheats on Erin and starts seeing Lani.After Erin has been at camp for less than a week, Jason realizes Erin isn't the one for him, but she’s at camp so he has to break up with her through letters. Now that Jason and Erin aren't together Lani feels it’s okay to date him. But will Erin see it Lanis way? Will Erin want revenge? But the biggest question is will they still be friends? Something Like Fate is very suspenseful and a big cliffhanger. The author, Susan C., does a very good job describing and showing that life really does happen because of fate or that everything happens for a reason. She also does a good job showing that problems always have a way to work themselves out and become right. Although the author does many things right the ending is not very strong. I disliked how she wrote about how Lani and Erin were so excited about senior year and yet she only wrote about half their year. Doesn't all senior fun happen at the end of the year?Something Like Fate was a great read and I wish there was a sequel.

      This book is about a girl who falls in love with her best friend's boyfriend. The main character's name is Lani and she has a friend named Erin. Erin just started dating Jason, who is the guy that Lani starts to like. Jason was liking Lani before he started dating Erin but he thought that Lani already had a boyfriend, so he didn't ask her out. Then Erin has to go to a camp during the summer where Jason sends her a letter telling her that he was breaking up with her. After Jason does that, he starts hanging out with Lani and they become like a couple. Erin doesn't know that they have been hanging out but when she gets back from camp she finds out and she is really mad. Erin sends an e-mail to their whole grade so that everyone thought that Lani had done something bad and that she is a boyfriend stealer. Lani and Jason start going out and everyone starts hating her and Jason. Erin made Lani promise that she wouldn't go out with Jason so then Lani tries to stay away from him. In the end Lani still ends up with Jason. When people think af girls who fall in love with their best friend's boyfriend they think they're bad people. This book is different. I liked it a lot because it was making the best freind seemed like the bad person, but not in the bad way. The thing is, Jason never really like Erin. He had liked Lani but thought she had a boyfriend who wasn't really her boyfriend but her really good friend who didn't even like girls. Even though the situation was bad in the beginning, Lani and Erin become friends again and Lani gets to be with Jason.

      I was looking forward to reading Something Like Fate. I'd read good reviews on Amazon, and I really liked the cover, so I was really excited when the audio book became available online from my library. Sadly, it was quite a disappointment! First of all, the book was very preachy. The main character was a very "green" person, and really looked down on and was pretty rude to people who weren't. I have nothing against recycling and taking care of our world, but it was just over and over and over. She was also obsessed with horoscopes which wouldn't have been terribly annoying if she hadn't brought it up every two minutes. I hate when a book forces ideas on you. Also, the idea that Jason was Lani's "soulmate" (although, she thought he was her first of two soul mates because of what a psychic told her) just because they liked all the same random things was ridiculous and extremely boring. Like, "OMG, you like kites?!?! I like kites too!!" and "You like train tracks? I'm obsessed with train tracks!! I can even hear trains from my house!!" "No way!!" or "I've always thought of that brand of water as 'Purple' and so does Jason!! How does he know that water is 'Purple'?" and "Erin didn't know the water was 'purple', so obviously Jason's meant for me because she can't appreciate him like I can."-- I'm serious, these were the things that were actually in the book. And there were a lot more things just like that.I really don't think I've read a worse book. I kept listening, thinking that it had to get better. I don't think I'll pick up anything by Colasanti again.

      I adore Susan Colasanti! I’ve read all of her books and they’re all amazing. When I got my hands on a copy of Something Like Fate, I knew I will love it. And I did! This book is really good. I believe this is my favorite Colasanti book. It comprises about friendships, first love, and a lesson to how a friendship can be affected when a guy comes along (between best friends who have history together).Lani and Erin have been friends since they were kids and have a history together. A history that, not a lot of people know about, bond them for the rest of their life. They were two completely two different people, different combination but they made it work. However, things started going downhill when Erin starts to date Jason. But Jason and Lani were connected since the first time they officially met. Lani had every right to like Jason, even though he is Erin’s boyfriend, but you can’t turn down a connection. I would hate to be in Lani's position, having to choose between her best friend, who saved her life, and a boy, she's madly in love with and who loves her back. I felt really sad for Lani during the book; she went through a lot of obstacles till she found what she wants, what she needs. I couldn’t put it down, and you won’t be able to put it down as well … believe me, I know. This was a quick, easy, interesting book to read; a must read.

      "Something Like Fate" by Susane Colasanti is about a classic love triangle between 3 high school friends. The triangle causes tension between main character Lori and best friend Erin. Jason, popular, cute guy at school, is going out with Erin but, is he also falling for best friend and main character Lori? The answer is yes! Things heat up when Erin comes back from camp and finds out that her now ex is going out with her best friend. rumors start at school then eventually hit the Internet, which is where Lori cracks and confronts Erin and puts their friendship on the line. Will Erin and Lori's friendship fall apart and Lori chooses Jason, her boyfriend, or stays with Erin and dumps Jason the boy she is madly in love with? This book is fantastic for readers that enjoy young romance and realistic fiction. It doesn't have too much romance that makes the reader want to put the book down, but just enough to make this book interesting. The best part of this book, to me, was when Jason took Lori on the old train tracks because it connects the two with memories. "i can see why Jason loves walking on the tracks so much. There are all these cool secret areas in the woods and old signs and hidden trails that you'd never see unless you were on this side of things." (Pg 137-138) "Did you used to play in the sandbox... I loved the sandbox... did you have a red bucket and shovel with... some kind of pattern on them... Smiley faces... Yes! Exactly... How do you know that... we played together. You let me borrow your bucket." (Pg 138-139) I'm sure everyone in the state of Massachusetts has heard of the new bullying laws. One part towards the end of the book there is a bullying scene. Rumors get spread about Lori in school and then eventually the Internet. The reason why I mentioned this is because I like how Susane Colasanti has real life topics in a realistic fiction book. Yes, this book has some really good parts, but it also has some bad ones. One thing I thought that was negative towards this book was it moved too fast. I also liked how it moved fast because it kept me focused and interested in the mayhem happening. The reason i didn't like it going too fast is because fast means less detail. I think that she could of added more details in the old train tracks scene, describing the surroundings which she didn't do and more of the special connection between Jason and Lori. I would give this book 3 1/2 stars. The three stars because it was really well written and had a very nice flow but not quite 4 stars because it was very fast paced and not quite enough detail as it should have had.

      SOMETHING LIKE FATE, by Susan Colasanti, was a beautiful and passionate story of fate and betrayal. Lani owes Erin everything, but she believes there are stronger forces in the universe that connects her to Jason.I am a believer in fate, karma, and the pull of the Unknown. This book strengthened my faith in the universe and its cosmic process. Lani was an incredible character. She never tried to be something she wasn't even when others looked down on her unique beliefs and practices.I was immediately drawn to Lani and Jason's relationship versus Erin and Jason's. Erin was very superficial and did not have much depth as a person. Lani and Jason started out their relationship on the same psychological level with each other which I thought was enchanting. Jason was absolutely swoon-worthy. He was so sweet and kind to Lani and Erin alike, it was difficult to see who he would end up with.Colasanti depicted considerable emotion in this story. The secret that Lani and Jason held back from Erin and their peers caused much pain to everyone involved. The betrayal against her best friend kept Lani on edge at all times which created tension in her and Jason's relationship. Also, since teenagers can be so hurtful, my heart went out to Lani when her secret was revealed.I liked the cover of this book. It portrayed the deceit accurately, and made me want to find out more about these relationships and how they would turn out.Overall, this was a great book. I appreciated the passion that all the characters portrayed and also the magical element of the Unknown.

      AH! Something Like Fate totally took me back to my high school days and the first two guys I had serious crushes on. Colasanti does a wonderful job of getting into the sometimes twisted world of high school friends and true love. While not exactly like Lani and Erin's friendship, I quickly identified a similar situation I experienced in my high school years and could completely feel the angst that Lani felt about hurting her best friend. Thankfully, Lani realizes that in the end fate can be changed if we dare to change it. I know my students will love this book and look forward to more from Colasanti!

      This is a perfect beach book... involves some romance, some teen angst, and some hurt feelings. The writing is easy to read, so the story flows pretty quickly... I predict that the girls who love "flaky" books will eat this up.

The story is told in first person, and we can see the secrets and desires of the main character, Lani.I liked this book, perhaps I was expecting more, but this is a YA book, so I understood that it was better that way.       So, if anyone remembers my review of The Unwritten Rule back from my Christmas series, it was a novel about a girl falling for her best friend's boyfriend. This novel follows the same idea. Erin is an outgoing girl that seems to go from boy to boy. And then there's Jason. She really likes Jason. And then on a "group date" like thing that Erin brings Jason to, Lani meets him, really meets him. Right away she feels a connection. From there it sort of just starts to spiral downward.Normally I'm a fan of such novels, and I really, really loved Colasanti's previous novels, but for some reason this one just didn't do it for me. I think it came down to the characters this time. I didn't really like any of the characters... and perhaps this has something to do with the fact that I'm not a huge fan of cheating, and this novel (for some reason) just felt like there was more cheating than in The Unwritten Rule. I don't like comparing novels, but when plots are similar... it's hard not to.I never really came to like Erin, but I did feel really bad for her. Lani and Jason had so many moments where they were alone that it just felt wrong. It just felt like Lani was breaking so much trust - and she was the one you were supposed to identify with. Instead I found her to be a bit whiny, and I'll be honest when I say I wouldn't want to be friends with her.Of course it takes two to tangle. So Jason isn't the greatest either. Emotional cheating, in my opinion, is just as bad as physical cheating. It's just not right... even if they're just teenagers. This novel just really ground my gears when it came to the emotional cheating. From the very beginning Lani and Jason had a connection, talked, hung out, everything. As Erin puts it, she just thought they were becoming friends because she was dating him. But, of course, there was more to it.And, as the plot says, Erin goes aways... and Lani and Jason really do become more than friends. Then it just all spirals downward from there.I don't know if I'd really recommend this novel to many. If you're a fan of Colasanti's previous work, perhaps give it a try. Otherwise I'd probably say you can pass on this one.

      I have wanted to read this book from the minute I seen the cover. There is just something about a really nice cover that latches me onto a book. When I read the description I had to read it even more. Who hasn't fallen in love with someone else's boyfriend? It happens all the time in high school and I think Susane Colasanti had a great idea here.This book has to be one of my top favorites. There are a few times that my jaw hung open as I was reading it. Especially how mean Erin got towards, Lani, who is her best friend. I have to agree with the idea of this book. That sometimes you can't control who you fall in love with, or who you want to be with. This was just an all around great book and I would recommend it to everyone!

      Something Like Fate is a typical YA novel of two best friends after the same guy. One takes the initiative and asks said guy, Jason, out. He agrees. But then the best friend of said girl, Lani, begins talking to him and finds out that she likes him…and he likes her back. They talk more, with Erin’s consent, and finds out that they have a lot in common! Like a freakish amount of things in common (I’m still wrapping my mind around the common oddities). So when the girl goes away, the cats will play. Jason’s and Lani’s relationship is refreshing and ever so endearing (awhhh). But when Erin comes back things go downhill….It was within the last few chapters that things get out of hand. Erin is a complete ’itch. Lani needs to stop being a pushover but they are times where I applaud her. To make amends for stealing her ex-boyfriend (yeah, ex), Erin tells Lani to stop seeing Jason, which she compiles. Excuse me for a second while I scream. Seriously!? Are you daft woman? In the very next line, Erin tells Lani that is yet to be forgiven and ignores her for the next several days at school. So the purpose of not seeing Jason is…?I dislike the ending very much so. It was way too fast. Erin apologies, Lani forgives; Lani apologies, Erin forgive; then cry and hug. That’s it. I did not see much character development for the majority.There were some characters that I found really enjoyable to read: Blake and Connor. Blake is gay but no one knows about it and Connor is from Canada (yay Canadians). They add a touch of serenity and whimsical humor at times that added much to the dialogues. I love the fact that Blake was able to forgive and grow whereas Connor is sweet, caring, and a steady rock.

      I was really glad that I got an advance copy of this book. I consider this as one of my early birthday present. Coincidently, this book will be released tomorrow, we have the same birthday :) I've never read any of Susan Colasanti's books and when I saw this last year and read the blurb, I know I got to read it. I love the dynamics of Erin, Black and Lani. Three close friends no matter how different, they still meet each other half way. Erin is the pretty one. The popular chick in your group, the one that has a lot of friends outside your circle, the one every boy wants to date, the one that other girls' wants to be her best friends with. Blake is a girl's ultimate best friend. Blake is gay. In a certain high school. He's the one who puts up a front pretending he's straight to keep her dad from finding out the truth. He's the one who notice how other guys look at you. Offers you honest advise whether you like it or not. And Lani? She's the average one. Smart, likeable, friendly and does her part in saving the environment. Unfortunately for Lani and Blake the whole school will go against them if Erin is not their to back them up...It all started with a guy named Jason. He's every girls in campus dream boyfriend. Erin like him. A lot. But when Jason met Lani sparks began to form. As a horoscope and all around fate junkie Lani saw the signs that they are somewhat predestined to each other. And they were, they have so many thing in common and they get each other like nobody does. There's only one thing that's stopping them. Erin and her complete blindness that Jason is a better partner for her best friend and vice versa. I like how everything pans out. There is a small part though, something in me will never really agree with Jason and Lani. Erin might be irritating and self centered all the time but part of me sides with him.
