About this audiobook
This sophisticated, no-holds-barred biography of Michael Jackson by his brother Jermaine is filled with keen insight, rich anecdotes, and behind-the-scenes detail.
Older than Michael by four years, Jermaine knows the real Michael as only a brother can. In this raw, honest, and poignant account, he reveals Michael the private person, not Michael “the King of Pop.” From their shared childhood and the Jackson 5 years through Michael’s phenomenal solo career, his loves, his suffering, and his tragic end, Jermaine doesn’t flinch from tackling the tough issues: the torrid press, the scandals, the allegations, the court cases, the internal politics, the ill-fated This Is It tour, and the disturbing developments in the days leading up to Michael’s death.
But where previous works have presented only thin versions of a media construct, Jermaine provides a rare glimpse into the complex heart, mind, and soul of a brilliant but sometimes troubled entertainer. As a witness to history on the inside, Jermaine is the only person qualified to deliver the real Michael and reveal what made him tick: his private opinions and unseen emotions through the most headline-making episodes of his life.
His hope is to foster a true and final understanding of Michael: who he was, what he was, and what shaped him.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Maybe I am missing something here. From the cover and the title, I thought this was going to be a book about Michael. It was mainly about Jermaine. It also did not really tell anything not previously known by most diehard MJ fans. I like Jermaine and his music. I just think the title and cover are a bit misleading. This was more or less, a Jermaine biography with traces of quotes and situations involving Michael. But maybe that was the intention, I don’t know, I could be wrong. But perhaps the title should be titled about Jermaine, as that is who the main focus of the book was. Many of the things discussed during the pre-Motown and Motown eras were showcased on The Jacksons: An American Dream. So nothing new here, but the book was still okay.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This pretty much was the audio version of the ABC miniseries The Jackson’s the American dream. Every story he mentions is in that show.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I really enjoyed the personal account of this story. True Jackson fans will appreciate the smaller details revealed in this story, but a lot of the early stages were covered in the Jackson’s miniseries. It was still worth a listen.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5First, let me admit that I was never a Jackson 5 or Michael Jackson fan as I just casually admired their music. Since the book was written be Jermaine Jackson I thought the book would be a totally biased "puff piece" but is was not. It is biased which is natural for a brother to defend his brother. But beyond this, the book shows the negative side of Papa Joseph Jackson's dominance of the family in the early years. The author also writes about many of the inter family squabbles over the years. So, I do believed the book was worth reading and it did give me a more sympathetic outlook toward Michael's struggles and a greater appreciation for his art, his work ethic and his charitable nature.
