Down Time Up North

THE remote North Queensland hunting camp disappeared in my rear-view mirror in a billowing cloud of grayish red bulldust as the Hi-lux rumbled down the road. I was still buzzing from the four days I had just spent with my mate and owner, Jason Knack, and guide Lochie.

Four days was not nearly enough, four weeks in this extraordinary part of the world would have suited me better. Months earlier, Jason contacted me and suggested that, as he had a window of around a week clear on his calendar, I should consider taking the 800klm drive from Cairns up to Kendall River Station and join him for a spot of hunting.

He did not have to repeat that offer I can assure you.
