I want every person that attends the exhibit to see themselves as the muted protagonist, the consummately undervalued woman, the ‘unimportant’ half of our nation. I want each viewer to be immersed in my message,” says Lummus. “I am creating art that is a small, sardonic celebration of the ‘ultimate American feminine.’ While gender equality has made significant strides, it remains that the ‘good’ American woman is a martyr. She sacrifices for image, for material, for children, for man; and is left with only our culture’s shared permission to be woman… By wrapping my social commentary in these bright, cute, and frivolous images, I can make my message not only more palatable, but more accessible to the general public.”
