Alice slipped into the garden by the back gate. She had her equipment with her; a couple of buckets, secateurs and, from habit, her trowel. The garden was full of tulips, hyacinths, little crocuses and trees loaded with blossom. It looked heavenly and smelt better. Alice couldn’t help smiling just a little bit. This garden was her personal work of art and its position on the village green, opposite the church, made it quite public. She loved the garden getting attention but she was less keen to be in the spotlight herself. Which was why she preferred the back gate.
