VALENTINE’S DAY, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14

WHEN MY HUSBAND, SCOTT, AND I were first married, we lived in a cute fourplex. Some of our neighbors discovered an antique steamer trunk while cleaning out Each history class was like a treasure hunt. My students archived the letters in chronological order. They researched ship manifests. They mapped the towns the letters hailed from. With their bright minds, they poured over the letters. There was a sense of excitement in the air. We were solving a mystery no one had ever solved before. Each letter was a treasure to be dug into. Henry and Bertha’s words were echoing through history.
