Picture this scene: you are standing in the queue at Zara on the wrong side of payday with an exquisite item you absolutely must have. As you inch closer to the front of the line you start sweating slightly, wondering if you can really afford this purchase. Nervously you hand over payment, only for your worst fear to be realised: The cashier declares loudly enough for the whole store to hear that your card has been declined. The above scenario makes a great comedy punchline but is an unfortunate reality for many South Africans.
