Noble sweets: Andy Howard MW reveals his top 12 beyond Sauternes

1 Château La Rame, Ste-Croix-du-Mont 2016 93

£14.99/50cl Majestic The Armand family is doing a great job in promoting Ste-Croix, with Angélique and husband Olivier now in charge at this 16ha estate. Fifty-year-old Semillon vines on sub-soils of fossilised oysters enhance the freshness of their sweet wines. Golden in colour, this is a rich wine balanced by great acidity and showing lots of finesse. Botrytis adds a hint of mushroom character and complexity. New oak needs slightly longer to blend in, but this has a long future ahead. 120g/L residual sugar. Drink 2021-2028
