PATH OF FIERCE QUESTIONING
WE cannot capture a living tradition in words and ideas. How could we? To know it you must enter it. Like life. But we humans are storytellers, artists in time and space. We create worlds with our words and then enter them, often forgetting the sharp taste of our lives—until we are reminded. Our worlds survive until they don’t, like now. Then what? If we mean to understand a life-giving path such as Zen, we need to stay close to that, we stay close to our questions. And our stories too can be a way to enter.
The first question we need to ask if we want to develop, or renew, our understanding of Zen is:
