The image above of a woman striding confidently through the Siege of Sarajevo in 1995 was an obvious choice for the book’s cover, he says. “She’s very beautiful and very proud, and this image kind of epitomises what I was trying to say about women,” explains Stoddart. “I’ve always been a passionate believer that when things are really tough, it’s the women and girls in families who put their shoulders to the wheel, show courage and get things done.”
