If theatregoing is curtailed, we can at least read about the art form. No sooner had I got back from the Theatre Royal than I came across this line: ‘So much for the taste(Longmans), edited by J. C. Trewin. Macready (1793–1873) was a great tragic actor, a relentless perfectionist and a hot-tempered man who recorded his impatience with the slovenly standards of the theatre of his time in his voluminous diaries.
