ICEC certifies hides, skins from the Amazon
The Italian Leather Quality Certification Institute (ICEC), in collaboration with the US National Wildlife Federation (NWF), will assess the supply chain for hides and skins from the Brazilian Amazon. By using a combination of innovative traceability tools, ICEC will now help improve supply chain visibility and effective monitoring of deforestation in Brazil’s rainforests.
The first two Italian tanneries to have ICEC traceability certificates are Conceria Italia and Conceria Poletto, which are accredited as companies that have adopted supply policies that guarantee that their skins have not caused deforestation or any other damage to the natural habitats originating in Brazil. These policies reaffirm the firm commitment of Italian tanneries to avoid deforestation of the Amazon by their suppliers of bovine hides, since livestock is usually behind a large part of the fires that burn this forest in order to win land from cultivation for the pastures with which they feed their cabin.
