Within this framework of reductionism, Gordon Bennett (1955-2014) explores historical and contemporary questions of shared and individual cultural identity. His emphatic conclusion of selfhood – ‘I am’ – is informed by his own sense of dual identity as an Australian of Aboriginal and Anglo-Celtic descent; further expressed in his artmaking which was used as a tool to resist and debate ingrained truths
