DOVER’S FINAL STEAMER

Caledonian Princess became the last steam-powered ferry to sail from Dover on 28 September 1981, and during a 20-year career served 19 different ports, before fulfilling static roles in Newcastle and Glasgow until she was towed to Aliaga, Turkey to be broken up during the autumn of 2008. Built in 1961 at the William Denny and Bros yard in Dumbarton for the Caledonian Steam Packet Co’s Irish Sea North Channel service from Stranraer to Larne, she was launched on 5 April 1961 and made a first sailing on 16 December the same year.

Powered by two double-reduction Pametrada geared turbines with oil-fired boilers, giving a speed of 20 knots, she was the first Denny boat to be fitted with stabilisers and a bow thruster. Built to carry 1,400 passengers in two classes,
