‘WE HAD A PRETTY SEVERE EPIDEMIC’

Professor Salim Abdool Karim, chairperson of the Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) on Covid-19, says that he could “write a book” on things that should have been done differently to manage the spread of the disease in South Africa, which imposed one of the strictest lockdowns in the world on 26 March.

He believes the biggest problem with what the country did first was bringing in the military to police the lockdown, which resulted in the death in April of Collins
