GRAPEVINES have been grown in the Clare Valley since explorer John Horrocks planted grenache at Penwortham in 1840. The Jesuit Brothers founded Sevenhill Cellars to make sacramental wine in 1851 and there are now dozens of small producers alongside bigger names like Taylors and Jim Barry.

While famous for 1056 hectares of outstanding riesling, the region actually has significantly more shiraz (1886 ha) and cabernet sauvignon
