OUR NEIGHBOURS
SOUTH Africa has close economic and cultural ties with its six neighbouring countries. SA and four of these countries – Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and eSwatini – form the Southern African Customs Union to maintain the free exchange of goods between them.
The other two, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, have thousands of citizens seeking a better life in SA. Many people from our neighbouring countries live, work or study in SA, while South Africans also do business in these countries or visit them as tourists. Let’s find out more.
NAMIBIA
This large, sparsely populated desert country in southwest Africa became independent from South Africa in 1990 and has since been relatively stable economically and politically.
