Howa’s .300 PRC Magnum Rifle
THIS is the latest precision rifle cartridge specifically designed to shoot long, heavy bullets and deliver increased ballistics at long range targets out of a standard long action.
Any list of successful bolt-action rifles has to include the wildly popular Howa Model 1500 which started out as a clone of Sako's L61 Finnbear action which appeared in the 1950s. It was a close copy even to having the tapered dovetails of the original Finnish action introduced shortly after the end of World War II. However, Sako pressured Howa into making a few changes to the action to get rid of any obvious Sako features, after which the Model 1500 gradually progressed, becoming very popular.
Most Aussie shooters are familiar with the Howa push-feed action which is a straightforward rugged design, but maybe a thumbnail, sketch is in order. The receiver has a flat bottom and heavy integral recoil lug under the receiver ring with plenty of metal left in the right rail for rigidity. It ends at the rear in a short stout tang. The face of the barrel is recessed to shroud the bolt head which is counterbored to house a Sako-type extractor and plunger ejector. The receiver ring has a small gas port on the left side.
