For scented flowers all summer, fill your garden with). These cottage-garden favourites thrive in well-drained soil, and also cope with drought and are excellent container plants. With delicate fringed petals, as if cut by pinking shears, hence their name, they look best edging a border. Go-to varieties include ‘Gran’s Favourite’ (right) and the super-fragrant ‘Mrs Sinkins’.
