Plaster mouldings
Decorative plasterwork has long been a feature in houses, impressing visitors and celebrating the skill of the craftspeople who created it. Early cornices were ‘run’ in situ and embellished with ‘enrichments’ cast separately in moulds. The process for producing decorative plasterwork was revolutionised in 1865, however, when fibrous plaster was patented. Lighter and stronger than solid plaster, fibrous plasterwork is formed from plaster, hessian and timber laths, making it possible to cast lengths of cornice and other items in the workshop in one prefabricated piece.
